Jasmine Harman: A Place In The Sun presenter ‘streetwise’ after living in ‘Murder Mile’

Jasmine Harman says she’s stuck in Spain after cancelled flight

Jasmine Harman, 45, admitted that at times she felt ashamed while living in a “rough” area of East London as a young girl, before it became gentrified. The A Place In The Sun presenter was born in Hackney and lived in a rented flat, sharing a bedroom with her siblings, before their family moved to Clapton, in an area branded Murder Mile at the time.

Although it has been cleaned up, at the time it could be dangerous.

In January 2002, eight men were shot dead in two years on Clapton Road, which had by then become one of the most unsafe areas of London.

Opening up on her upbringing, Jasmine said: “We moved to Clapton in another part of Hackney, which as the time was nicknamed, ‘Murder Mile.’

“It’s very much gentrified now, but it was a bit rough back then which made me quite streetwise.

“It was a housing co-op property and the first time we’d had a bedroom each, so we were able to choose the paint colour for our bedrooms,” she added to Wigwam Swindon.

However, as Jasmine grew older, she began to become more aware of her surroundings and started to feel embarrassed of her family home, due to mum’s issue with hoarding.

She continued: “In my early twenties I was still living at home but I began to feel ashamed of where and how we lived.

“I kept it a secret by never letting friends come round, never letting a boyfriend visit, and I noticed that everybody lived differently to us.”

Jasmine eventually got a job in Portugal, working in marketing and lived in exclusive golf resort Val Do Lobo.

Before going on to land a presenting role on Channel 4’s A Place In The Sun in 2004.

In a recent episode of the programme, Jasmine could be seen fuming after a couple snubbed a plush Spanish villa she had shown them.

Jasmine introduced Mandy and Paul from Sussex to a host of properties in the Alicante region of Spain.

The couple had a budget of £185,000 and wanted a property that had three bedrooms, a garden and private swimming pool.

Jasmine set to work showing them five properties, with Mandy and Paul being impressed by the first villa in Catral, saying it had given them “a lot to think about”.

However, the second property, a three-bedroom villa in San Bartolome, did not impress the couple.

Jasmine couldn’t hide her shock when they told her they would feel “isolated”.

The star responded in disbelief: “Are you serious? This is so much closer to amenities.”

However, despite it being nearer to town and having most of their requirements, they remained adamant that is was not for them.

Jasmine stated: “I’m a little disappointed with your reactions,” before promising they would like the next properties she had to show them.

Thankfully the fifth property they viewed turned out to be a winner for the couple.
