The news of Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck rekindling their relationship was the big headline of 2021, but now in early 2023, the pair are finally a married couple. It only took them 20 years and two engagements to get here, as Jennifer recalled the emotional turmoil she experienced after cancelling her first wedding to Ben in 2004.

The Hollywood A-listers rekindled their relationship and tied the knot this year, but it hasn’t always been an easy ride for the pair.

Looking back at her up-and-down relationship with Ben, the pop icon recalled the heartbreak of calling off their initial wedding nearly two decades ago.

Speaking with Zane Lowe in an Apple Music interview published late last year, Lopez admitted how “painful” it was to go through the breakup.

“It was so painful after we broke up,” she explained to Lowe, as she went on to recall the emotional separation.

The actress revealed: “It sent me on a spiral for the next 18 years where I just couldn’t get it right.

“But now, 20 years later, it does have a happy ending. It has the most ‘would never happen in Hollywood’ ending,” she added.

Jennifer and Ben first met in 2001 on the set of their famous box office flop Gigli.

At the time, Jennifer was married to Cris Judd, her second husband, whom she met on the set of her music video for Love Don’t Cost a Thing and wed in September 2001.

In an interview with Vanity Fair for a feature released in March 2003, Ben addressed all rumours surrounding his relationship with the Jenny from the Block singer while she was married.

“When I met her we became really, really, really good friends,” he said.

He continued: “But at first, because she was married, there was no thought of a romantic relationship.

“So that created the opportunity to get to know each other without any of the falseness that goes with courtship because you’re trying to make a good impression,” the actor explained.

After kicking it off from the get-go and finally going public with their relationship, the pair got engaged in 2002, where their relationship later got coined “Bennifer” by relentless paparazzi.

They then began planning a star-studded ceremony in 2003, but they were forced to postpone it “due to the excessive media attention.”

They released a joint statement that read: “Due to the excessive media attention surrounding our wedding, we have decided to postpone the date.

“We began to feel that the spirit of what should have been the happiest day of our lives could be compromised. We felt what should have been a joyful and sacred day could be spoiled for us, our families, and our friends,” they concluded.

Sadly the pair split the following year, as a representative confirmed the news to People, saying: “Jennifer Lopez has ended her engagement to Ben Affleck.

“At this difficult time, we ask that you respect her privacy,” they added.

But in true Hollywood fairytale fashion, Jennifer rekindled her relationship with her former flame in 2021 after her split from Alex Rodriguez.

The couple then married in the summer of 2022 before they followed up their private Las Vegas elopement with a traditional ceremony at Ben’s property in Savannah, Georgia that August.
