JJ Chalmers is heading to Tokyo to present coverage of the Paralympic Games. However, the former Strictly Come Dancing contestant has opened up about an emotional reunion on his Instagram.
The Invictus Games medalist and presenter shared how he’d actually met his pilot before.
In a series of pictures, JJ shared how it was the same man who flew him out of Afghanistan after he suffered severe injuries.
Back in May 2011, while serving in Helmand Province, he was hit by an IED blast.
This gave him facial injuries, loss of two fingers and the loss of his right elbow.
Posting on his Instagram earlier today, JJ explained: “This is David Ellis he just flew me out to the Tokyo for the #Paralympics.
“But, it’s not the first time I’ve been on one of his flights.
“Incredibly he flew me home, unconscious on a hospital plane, when I was Wounded in Afghanistan. Unreal!”
The presenter continued: “Thank You, It was an honour to meet you Sir.
“(For the record the 4th picture was taken in the hospital in Afghanistan when they prepared me to be flown home 10 years ago… it was obviously not taken on my flight to Japan, like the other, as my recent flight with @British_Airways was extremely pleasant and not just by comparison.)”
JJ also shared an image of him badly injured in hospital back in 2011.
The presenter’s followers were left awestruck by the reunion, with many taking to the comments to share their thoughts.
Gethin Jones replied to the post, writing: “That’s mad!”
One of JJ’s fans wrote: “That last picture makes me want to cry…..
“So shocking and all caused by a human….
“I am so proud of you guys who put your life at risk to keep us safe.”
Another penned: “What an astounding, astonishing, breathtaking, emotional coincidence, JJ. Mr. Ellis was instrumental in saving your life.
“So worthy of thanks – and tears…”
“How amazing for you both to meet in much happier circumstances,” added a third.
A fourth replied: “Incredible! What a coincidence, sometimes people are placed in your life at certain times for a reason.
“What a lovely story to share together x.”
