Former A Place in the Sun presenter, Jonnie Irwin, who has been loved by audiences for nearly two decades, has excitingly teased a potential return to the world of presenting. In 2020, his world changed drastically when he received a devastating diagnosis of terminal cancer, which he later shared with the public in 2022.
Following the announcement, Jonnie's contract with A Place in the Sun ended, and he has been dedicating his time to palliative care while cherishing moments with his wife, Jessica, and their three children: Rex, four, and two-year-old twins Rafa and Cormac.
Throughout his cancer journey, Jonnie has been candidly updating his 183,000 Instagram followers and sharing helpful DIY and home renovation tips. Recently, he hinted at a possible presenting comeback in a brand new project.
Jonnie reposted a clip from Mayfair Worktops, a company specializing in high-quality Granite and Quartz worktops. The video showed Jonnie in the kitchen, alongside two guests, as the production team prepared to film, with the caption reading: “Behind the scenes with @jonnieirwintv”. He has previously appeared in the company's videos for their rebranding last year.
Amidst his cancer treatment, Jonnie has received palliative care from "day one" and spoke positively about his experience during an appearance on Morning Live. He encouraged others to consider these options if offered, highlighting the support and care they can provide.
He told hosts Gethin Jones and Helen Skelton : "I've been using [palliative care] for three years. Palliative care is the care that you're given when the doctors think you won't recover, so I've been in palliative care since day one."
Discussing his time in a hospice, which he has been visiting as a day patient, Jonnie continued: "It's a delight actually, I wouldn't say it's like a hotel but it's like a very very nice private hospital.
"My perception of a hospice was very much a boiling hot room full of people that look frail and towards the end of their days, but it's nothing of the sort.
"It's spacious, energised, comfortable, I mean it's even got a jacuzzi pool, en-suite rooms and the staff are just amazing. So I've had a really really good experience at my hospice."
Jonnie was initially given six months to live when first diagnosed with stage four lung cancer, but has outlived doctors' predictions with the help of medication, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
Last November, he appeared on Good Morning Britain where he discussed his diagnosis and revealed that trolls had forced him to go public.
He said: "I wanted to keep it secret because professionally I didn't want to lose work. Also, socially and emotionally, people treat you differently."
He continued: "People start making decisions for you: 'I didn't want to ask you because you know you've got cancer'. So if I withheld that information, I found I could live a normal life right up until probably a year ago."
