Julian Lennon Sings Imagine For First Time To Raise Money For Ukraine

Julian Lennon, son of the legendary John Lennon, broke his vow to never perform his father’s iconic solo song, “Imagine.” Julian performed the peace anthem for the first time during a benefit for Ukrainian refugees on Saturday, April 9.

“As a human, and as an artist, I felt compelled to respond in the most significant way I could,” Lennon wrote on Instagram along with a candle-lit video performance of the song. “So today, for the first time ever, I publicly performed my Dad’s song, IMAGINE.”

Julian performed the cover as part of the “Stand Up For Ukraine” campaign, a global fund-raising effort broadcast from Warsaw, Poland, which raised over $10 billion for refugee assistance.

“But also because his lyrics reflect our collective desire for peace worldwide. Because within this song, we’re transported to a space, where love and togetherness become our reality, if but for a moment in time…” wrote Lennon. “The song reflects the light at the end of the tunnel, that we are all hoping for…”

“Imagine” was a song from John’s 1971 album of the same name. The best-selling single of his solo career, the lyrics encourage listeners to imagine a world of peace, without materialism, without borders separating nations and without religion.
