Just one celebrity featured in the Golden Globes – Jamie Lee Curtis

Jamie Lee Curtis was the only celebrity to feature in the usually jam-packed Golden Globe Awards.

The event took place last night, Sunday 9 January, in Beverley Hills and, typically celebrities come far and wide to attend the once-prestigious ceremony. But Jamie Lee, 63, was one of the few people to publicly associate herself with the Golden Globes this year.

Celebrities chose to boycott the Golden Globes in light of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's (HFPA) lack of diversity and accusations surrounding votes being influenced by production companies.

All of last night’s winners were announced on social media and the event was not televised. However, it did feature a video of the Halloween actress.

Over the course of her career, Jamie Lee has won two Golden Globes, as well as receiving seven nominations.

Gushing over the Association, she said: “So, for a long time, I didn’t realise that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association was in fact a 501(C)(3) charitable organisation and that they use the funds generated by the Golden Globe Awards to and the telecast to fund incredible programmes throughout our community.”

Jamie Lee continued: “They do so at a very low key, off the record, evening of giving. I’ve been the lucky host of that evening a couple of times. And so I just wanted to honour and stand with them in this continued advocacy of great need and great support that the HFPA continue to serve and offer with their generosity.”

She added that she’s “proud to be associated with (the HFPA) with this venture”.

The 2022 awards were the first in years that NBC hasn’t broadcast.

In a statement issued before the ceremony, NBC said: “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform.

“However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming the organization executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.”

Following the expose on the HFPA’s lack of diversity, the Association has already made changes to its committee and installed a new board of directors made up of two-thirds of women and one-third of people of colour.

The organisation said in a press release distributed last month: “Over the last eight months, the HFPA has completely overhauled its bylaws, implementing sweeping changes from top to bottom addressing ethics and code of conduct, diversity, equity and inclusion, governance, membership and more.”
