Wardrobe malfunction or deliberate ploy? Jumanji star Karen Gillan brings whole new meaning to off-the-shoulder
When most actresses expose their bra on the red carpet, it’s the result of an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction.
But when Karen Gillan took the off-the-shoulder look to an apparently embarrassing extreme at the premiere of her latest movie, the look was entirely intentional.
The scarlet frock that the Guardians Of The Galaxy star wore at the launch of her indie comedy-drama Late Bloomers in Austin, Texas, on Friday was deliberately designed to reveal her baby-pink satin underwear.
It comes from the spring-summer collection of Italian design house No 21, and was worn exactly the same way on the catwalk when it was unveiled at Milan Fashion Week last year.
However, the Inverness-born star was a little more demure earlier in the day when she wore the same keyhole dress over her shoulder to take part in a Q&A session at the South by Southwest festival about the new movie.

The 35-year-old Doctor Who star said she enjoyed working on a lower-budget film rather than a Marvel blockbuster, telling The Hollywood Reporter: ‘I feel like there’s something to not having this huge trailer that you disappear into with all the snacks you could possibly want.
‘It’s nice to just be all in it together.’
In Late Bloomers, Gillan plays an aimless musician who falls drunkenly and breaks her hip, prompting a stay on a physical therapy ward with the elderly.
Her attire has attracted comment before, notably when she appeared in tiny shorts and a crop top in Jumanji, while her male co-stars were more practically dressed.
At the time she laughed it off, saying: ‘When you look at that picture out of context, it looks absurd that the woman is dressed like that and then the men are covered – but that is exactly the trope that we were highlighting in 1990s video games, this ridiculous male fantasy.
‘The fact that the picture sparked that kind of debate I think is actually a positive thing for people to be having those conversations.’
The phrase ‘wardrobe malfunction’ was coined after singer Janet Jackson caused outrage during the 2004 Super Bowl half-time show, when her co-star Justin Timberlake ripped off her top, exposing one of her breasts, covered with a nipple shield. Although many commentators believe the stunt was planned, Timberlake sought to quell the controversy by saying he was ‘sorry that anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction’.
In 2016, Fifty Shades Of Gray star Dakota Johnson was collecting a prize in LA when the strap of her top snapped, prompting her to joke: ‘It’s not like nobody here hasn’t already seen my boobs.’
