Kate beams at William during Wales visit as he makes loving gesture

Prince WilliamandKate Middleton, the Prince and Princess of Wales, made their first official visit to the country after inheriting their new titles earlier this month.

The royal couple first visited Anglesey, where they lived for three years after getting married, before travelling to Swansea.

The Prince and Princess appeared to be in high spirits as they later greeted members of the public at St Thomas Church in Swansea, where they could be seen smiling at one another, with William sweetly touching his wife’s shoulder in a loving gesture.

St Thomas Church has recently been converted into a community hub to help provide vital services to struggling families and people who are homeless, with the royal couple meeting with the staff and volunteers who made this possible.

During their trip to Wales, William revealed that he has started learning Welsh, and already knows how to ask for a cup of tea.

Speaking to Reverend Steven Bunting, of St Thomas Church, the Prince discussed how he was getting to grips with learning a new language amidst other new duties that come with his new role.

Rev Bunting told the PA news agency: “We already know they love Wales, but having them here has been amazing and is an early sign, I think, of their commitment to Wales.

“They’ve blown us away by speaking to every person young and old, it shows how wholly committed they are to their role as Prince and Princess of Wales.

“The Prince of Wales was even talking about learning Welsh, and said he’d learned the word ‘paned’ meaning cup of tea and ‘bara brith’. I think he’s taking being Prince of Wales very, very seriously.”

William's father, King Charles, studied Welsh while at university in Aberystwyth and paid tribute to his teacher Tedi Millward when he died in 2020.

It is understood that William currently has no plans for “any kind” of an investiture like the ceremony staged for the King, who was officially invested with the title Prince of Wales by the Queen during an event staged at Caernarfon Castle in July 1969.

A spokesperson for the couple said this week: “Right now they are focused on deepening the trust and respect they have with the people of Wales over time.”

Intheir new roles as Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate are expected to make much more frequent visits to the country as they continue to “support the aspirations of the Welsh people and to shine a spotlight on both the challenges and opportunities in front of them.”

The couple are expected to return again before Christmas, although whereabouts in the country has not yet been confirmed.
