Kate Garraway, 53, is opening up about her husband Derek Draper’s, 53, battle against Covid in a documentary called Finding Derek. However, many will be wondering what the latest on Derek’s health is currently – here’s what the Good Morning Britain presenter has said about this.
Is Derek Draper still in hospital?
Derek was first diagnosed with Covid in March 2020 and has been in hospital since.
During this time, he fell into a coma and has been dealing with the after-effects of the virus.
This includes kidney failure, damage to his lungs, liver and pancreas and heart failure.
As a result, Derek is still in hospital but is not currently in a coma.
However, he remains in a state of minimal consciousness after emerging from a deep coma last year.
During a trailer for her documentary Kate is seen at the moment Derek woke from this.
He is seen in tears through a video call as a tearful Kate speaks to him.
She said: “He’s back. We’ve been waiting a long time to speak to you.
“I’m so proud of you. I’m so proud of you.”
Kate gave an update on his condition on Good Morning Britain earlier today.
The presenter spoke about how they’ve been able to exchange words but cannot have full conversations yet.
She explained: “That has regressed since the documentary a little bit, it has to be said. This year has not been so good.”

Kate’s former GMB co-star Piers Morgan did also reveal how Kate was told at one point he may never come out of his coma.
Speaking earlier this year on the morning news programme: “We know from our colleague Kate Garraway whose husband Derek is still in a coma from Covid.
“He may never come out of that coma. She’s been told this and it’s heartbreaking.”
Kate’s documentary will be airing at 9pm tonight on ITV and will look back at the year past.
She has spoken about how it will also feature a difficult moment when Derek told her he wasn’t sure he would be able to go on.
Kate opened up about this tearfully on GMB earlier: “There is a moment in the documentary which I think is tough for people to watch.
“And that is the moment where he feels he can’t go on.
“I managed to record that moment, actually it was quite a long period of that in truth.
“That particular moment was actually a night when I then came in here and was on air the next morning.
“Because it started late at night and I didn’t want to come off the FaceTime, I wanted to stay with him and say ‘I’m still here, I’m still here.’
“So we kept going through the night and in the car on the way to work and then I said to the nurses, ‘Can you put Good Morning Britain on so he can see that’s where I am and doesn’t feel abandoned.’”
Finding Derek is on ITV tonight at 9pm.
