Speaking on Good Morning Britain to co-host Ben Shephard, 46, today, Kate Garraway, 53, spoke candidly about her children returning to school while her husband Derek Draper, 53, remains in hospital. The TV presenter opened up about the homeschooling situation in her house, before saying her offspring are “facing up to the reality” of going back to the classroom.

There’s a lot of people very excited about that – apart from my kids

The favourite GMB duo were discussing the nationwide opening of schools on March 8.

After being informed by her co-host that today was the last day of homeschooling, Kate acknowledged the hotly-anticipated event by revealing how teaching at home was going in her house.

She said: “There’s a lot of people very excited about that – apart from my kids who are basically not being schooled by me!”

Kate shares two children with Derek – Darcey, 14 and William, 11.

The ITV presenter continued: “So therefore, [they] are facing up to the reality of having to get their heads around some education!”

In spite of returning to a school environment, Kate revealed that her children were looking forward to being reunited with their friends.

She said: “Actually to be honest, they are very excited about seeing friends at school and getting back into the swing of it.

“But probably not as excited as mums and dads out there!”

The broadcaster’s world was turned upside down last March when former lobbyist Derek was rushed to hospital with Covid.

Since then, the presenter has been raising her two children alone for a year, while juggling the demands of work.

Even though Derek is now testing negative for the coronavirus, he remains in intensive care as the virus has damaged his body.

Kate is set to host an ITV documentary later this year, detailing the devastating toll the last year has had on her and her children.

A description for the show reads that the presenter will give “an unflinching account of the profound effects on her family and on others”.

Kevin Lygo, managing director of media and entertainment at ITV, has also offered viewers an insight into what to expect from the documentary.

Teasing the network’s Spring coverage, he said: “Also announced as part of the schedule is a special one-off film titled Kate Garraway: Finding Derek.”

He continued: “[It] will offer viewers an intimate insight into coping with the impact of COVID-19 as her husband Derek Draper remains seriously ill a year on from contracting the virus.”

Fans of the presenter on Twitter have already reacted to the news, with one writing: “Brave and dignified throughout, we love Kate Garraway.”

The mother-of-two has also recently opened up about not being able to see her husband during the current UK lockdown.

The last time Kate was able to see her husband in ICU was during the Christmas period, when the couple’s children were reunited with their father for the first time since he was admitted.

As well as featuring in a new ITV documentary, the mother-of-two will also be publishing a book about her family’s ordeal later in the Spring.
