Kate Middleton makes secret tribute to the Queen at the Christmas carol concert

Kate Middleton appeared to make a heartfelt tribute to the Queen during her latest appearance.

The Duchess of Cambridge, 39, was the picture of festivities as she donned a red coat dress by designer Catherine Walker for the Together at Christmas carol service on Wednesday.

Organised with her husband Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, also 39, the royal couple delivered a truly festive evening as they hosted the event, which was attended by various invitees and celebrities.

It also paid tribute to the work of individuals and organisations across the UK who have supported their communities through the coronavirus pandemic.

But the Duchess also delivered a subtle nod to the 95 year old monarch and the Queen's own mother with her choice of jewellery.

The concert was televised for ITV at Westminster Abbey, so fans could zero in on the gems.

Kate was seen wearing a pair of Art Deco-style drop earrings adorned with diamonds and glittering with a large blue sapphire at the centre, an item that was notably loaned from the late Queen Mother's personal jewellery collection.

Very few royals have been pictured wearing items previously owned by the Queen Mother, who died aged 101 in 2002, so the special tribute was a poignant one for the Christmas occasion.

The Queen Mother was famously seen wearing the jewels herself during an outing to the theatre back in 1986, where she watched a play called Rookery Nook.

It comes as some royal fans were surprised the Duke and Duchess didn't bring their three children Prince George, eight, Charlotte, six and Louis, three, along to the Together at Christmas concert.

Royal expert Duncan Larcombe claimed the couple chose not to break one of their rules for the children by making them stay at home.

"The reality is that William and Kate have a rule that they do not take the children on any official engagements," Duncan said.

"We only really see them on the balcony waving at set piece royal events, but there are exceptions to that rule like when George was at Wembley for the Euros final."

The author continued to say that the Duke and Duchess are also strict on not allowing their kids to stay up late on school nights.

"It was on a school night and they are pretty strict," Duncan explained. "The children are in a rather strict regime so that might have been the reason.

"But the fact it was a televised official engagement it's interesting because I think it shows that William and Kate are still reluctant to focus too greatly officially on their family and their children."
