Kate Middleton showcases musical talent as she plays piano at televised carol concert

The Duchess of Cambridge has given a preview of her piano skills ahead of her televised carol concert.

The Royals’ carol service took place at the Abbey on Wednesday 8 December, which both Kate and Prince William attended, and with Kate hosting the annual event.

Ahead of the concert being televised on Christmas Eve on ITV, the Duchess shared a clip which shows her walking up to a piano and preparing to play.

In the short clip, Kate is surrounded by candles and is wearing a floor-length red gown with her hair worn in loose waves.

The concert, which is called Royal Carols: Together At Christmas, was recorded at Westminster Abbey, which holds a special significance for William and Kate as it was where they got married in 2011.

“I’m so excited to be hosting Together at Christmas here at Westminster Abbey, a place that’s really special to William and me,” the 39 year old says in the programme’s introduction which was recorded before the service.

“We wanted to say a huge thank you to all those amazing people out there who have supported their communities. We also wanted to recognise those whose struggles perhaps have been less visible too.

“We’ve been through such a bleak time. We’ve seen so many challenges. We’ve lost our loved ones. We’ve seen our frontline workers under immense pressure. And also we’ve been more emotionally and socially distanced and isolated from each other.

“But I suppose through that separation, we’ve also realised how much we need each other and how acts of kindness and love can really bring us comfort and relief in times of distress.”

Kate goes on to say that there are “many inspirational individuals” in attendance at the service, and that “we owe them a huge debt of gratitude for all they’ve done in bringing people together and supporting their communities”.

“But above all it’s about celebrating the goodwill, the acts of kindness, love, empathy, and compassion to help people come through these difficult times.”

The Duchess further promised that the event has “so many wonderful carols”, and discussed how important music has been to many people over the course of the pandemic – including herself.

“Music was so important to me during the pandemic as I think it was to so many people too,” said the Duchess.

“I hope everyone can enjoy this evening with their family and friends. And I wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year,” Kate concluded.

Celebrities set to sing or perform readings at the concert include Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway, who recently admitted she found reading to the Duke and Duchess "intimidating".

The service will also feature performances from Leona Lewis and Ellie Goulding and a performance of To The Day – a composition created for the service by poet and writer Lemn Sissay.

Royal Carols: Together At Christmas will air at 7:30pm on Christmas Eve on ITV.
