Kate Middleton was once asked if she was Prince William’s “assistant” during a royal visit and gave a hilarious response.
The future Queen proved she had a sense of humour during a visit to the Shire Hall Care Home in Cardiff in August 2020.
William, 39, and Kate, 40, paid a visit to the home in person after previously joining the residents virtually for a game of bingo during lockdown.
However, when the couple later visited in person, they got more than they bargained for when introduced to resident Joan Drew-Smith.
As the royal couple arrived, William, wearing a blue fabric face covering, told Joan: “We have to wear masks because of the virus, but it’s difficult to hear sometimes when you can’t see someone’s mouth.”
The 87 year old seemed unfazed, pointing at Kate and asking Prince William: “Is that your assistant?”
Handling the situation with a laugh, Kate responded: “Well, I am your assistant… I have been for a long time!”
The Duke of Cambridge later told staff: "I love Joan, she's brilliant. If only everyone was as honest as her."
It wasn’t the first time the couple had spoken with Joan and received a funny response.
When the couple hadjoined the residents of the care home for a game of virtual bingo, Joan was the big winner – and she didn't waste any rime in letting the Royal couple what she thought of their hosting skills.
“How did we do at bingo? Did we do okay?,” William asked, to which Joan replied: “Very good. Wasn’t as good as it should have been.”
The Duke and Duchess then giggled at her response before signing off by saying: “We’ll say a big thank you and goodbye to everybody. We’ll try and do a bit better at bingo next time!”
The couple then spoke to staff, including care worker Karen, who told them: “It has been quite a hard couple of months, I must be honest. I’ve been in the care home industry here for 12 years in Shire Hall and worked for Hallmark and we’ve never, ever – as you can imagine – come across anything quite like this.”
William asked: “So you’re doing a lot more hours, you’re a lot more involved, I guess, and are there a lot more than normal. How is that, plus the sort of responsibilities you all have now with keeping all the PPE kit on and everything else? Is that worrying?”
Karen told him: “We’ve sort of grown into it because to start off with it was just the hand washing and the masks, and then it was the aprons, then it was gloves, then it was, you know, all the extras that go on on top.”
