It would be easy to assume the late Prince Philip and his granddaughter-in-law Kate Middleton were not very similar, but the duo had far more in common than many of us may have thought.
After marrying Prince William in April 2011, Kate took on a role that the Queen’s husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, knew all too well.
Over the years, the Duchess of Cambridge, 39, and her husband’s grandfather, who sadly passed away last Friday at the age of 99, showed they had a truly special bond.
Here, we look back at some of our favourite Kate and Philip moments…

This touching moment revealed a snapshot of how excited Philip was each time he was due to welcome another great-grandchild.
When the Duchess of Cambridge was five months pregnant with her first child, Prince George, she joined Philip and Queen Elizabeth on a visit to the London Underground.
At the March 2013 event, Philip was inquisitive when Kate was presented with a small gift by a member of staff.
You can clearly see the joy in Kate’s face when she showed her grandfather-in-law that she has been given a ‘baby on board’ badge which she wore proudly on her blue coat.

Prince Philip wasn’t only a great support to Kate when she was expecting, but also when she became a mother.
Kate and Philip stood together in 2017 on the balcony of Buckingham Palace at Trooping the Colour.
Although they were amongst other members of the royal circle, the pair seemed to engage in jokes between themselves as Kate looked after Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
Talking to the Express, body language expert Judi James explained: "Kate manages to control her two boisterous children with her hands while turning her head to pay full eye-attention to Philip. Her dimpled smile and softened eye expression show genuine affection but her fully opened-mouth laugh suggests she's finding Philip's comments genuinely hilarious.”
Kate Who?
The Duchess of Cambridge slotted into her royal role seamlessly, but she could never compete with the experience the Duke of Edinburgh gained during his 70 years of marriage to the Queen.
Take, for example, when Kate stood alongside Philip during Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday celebration in June 2016.
Prince Philip waved excitedly to the crowds as Kate sweetly laughed at her husband's grandfather, who was delighted to be entertaining onlookers.
Quit Horsing Around
Watching the Royal Windsor Horse show together in 2016, the Duchess of Cambridge and her grandfather-in-law showed off their close bond.
The royal duo sat side by side as they admired the show and exchanged words with smiles on their faces.
In moments like these, it was clear to see how much Kate admired the Duke of Edinburgh.
Talking the the Express in 2017, a royal source explained: “If you look at Kate’s approach you will notice that it is very much in support of William, first and foremost, but also about carving her own charitable path, as he has done with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and his long involvement with charities like the WWF.”
