Katie Piper defends Jo Brand’s acid attack joke: ‘I’m not joining this witch hunt’

Katie Piper has defended Jo Brand over a controversial joke she made about acid attacks in 2019.

The 64 year old comedian was discussing an attack in which milkshake had been thrown at a number of politicians on a BBC Radio 4 show.

Jo – who hosts The Great British Bake Off's spin-off show An Extra Slice – said: "I’m thinking why bother with a milkshake when you could get some battery acid."

Katie, who was the victim of an acid attack in 2008, has now spoken out on Jo's comments as she joined Sophie Ellis-Bextor on her podcast Spinning Plates.

The Loose Women panellist said: “People misinterpreted it and were like, ‘Poor Katie Piper, how do you think she feels about your joke?’'

"I love her comedy. She’s super-smart and what she was saying was in the comedy circuit in the context of a joke about it and was in no way reflective of how she feels about disability or disfigurement.

"I never commented on it and I don’t feel any which way about it at all. I’m not joining this witch hunt."

An Ofcom spokeswoman said at the time: "Acid attacks are extremely serious crimes. We found that these comments had clear potential to offend listeners.

"But we also considered the audience’s likely expectations of Jo Brand’s style – and of this established show, which sets out to challenge accepted views in society through provocative comedy.

"We also took into account that Ms Brand immediately qualified her comments, making it clear they shouldn’t be taken seriously or acted upon."

Katie, who has been awarded an OBE for her services to charity, recently revealed that she almost rejected the honour.

Speaking on Loose Women, the 38 year old said: "Actually, it's quite a funny story. When I first set my charity up eleven years ago, we very kindly had an office for free for the year.

"And the award, for some reason, went to that old office address.

"So I didn’t reply back, so I nearly missed the cut-off date of actually accepting the honour."
