Kelly Clarkson performed a soaring cover of Prince‘s “When Doves Cry”, during the Kellyoke segment of her chat show on Wednesday, June 3.
Clarkson performed the cover as a tribute to the late legend, who would have celebrated his 63rd birthday on Sunday, June 7.
“When Doves Cry” is the lead single from Prince’s sixth studio album Purple Rain. “When Doves Cry” was Prince’s first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 single, staying there for five weeks, and was also a worldwide hit.
According to Billboard, it was the top-selling single of 1984. It is certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).
“How can you just leave me standing/ Alone in a world that’s so cold?/ Maybe I’m just too demanding/ Maybe I’m just like my father: too bold/ Maybe you’re just like my mother/ She’s never satisfied/ Why do we scream at each other?/ This is what it sounds like/ When doves cry,” Clarkson crooned in the chorus, backed by her band Y’all under purple lights.
Last week, the Prince estate released a previously unreleased track “Born 2 Die,” which was originally recorded during the sessions for his 2010 Welcome 2 America album. That album is set to drop on July 30.
