Kerry Katona has said she drank three bottles of prosecco a day to help her cope with PTSD, though she made sure the kids never saw her drunk.
The former Atomic Kitten singer revealed the shocking truth in her new book, Whole Again – Love, Life and Me: My Story.
Kerry says she believes she experienced post-traumatic stress disorder after her youngest daughter, DJ, was born in 2014.
“I really believe I had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder,” Kerry wrote. “In fact, it was one of the reasons I started drinking around that time – that and the continuing abuse from George and his controlling manner.”
Kerry, 42, added: “I started downing up to three bottles of Prosecco a day, although I remained super cautious of not letting the kids see me drunk.”
She believes the dark period was spurred by nearly losing her life during labour when she suffered pre-eclampsia, which causes vital organs to swell.
DJ, which is short for Dylan-Jorge, was placed on life support immediately after being born.
Kerry is also mum to Lilly-Sue, 19, and 21-year-old Molly, who she had during her marriage to Westlife star Brian McFadden.
Heidi, 15, and 14-year-old Maxwell are also shared with ex-husband Mark Croft.
Kerry married Rugby League player George Kay in 2014, but by 2015, the singer had announced their separation after he allegedly assaulted her at their family home in Crowborough.
George was arrested at the time for assault by beating and possessing a banned weapon, but these charges were later dropped due to a lack of evidence
One ordeal saw the Warrington Wolves A-Team player accuse Kerry of flirting with Blue boyband member Antony Costa.
Detailing the subsequent “beating” afterwards, Kerry said George grabbed a fistful of her hair and branded her disgusting.
She alleges that he “skull dragged” her across the room and locked her in the bathroom as punishment.
Just hours later, Kerry was filming The Big Reunion with her Atomic Kitten bandmates and remembers struggling to keep it together.
Other incidents saw Kerry strangled while in the car and beaten while heavily pregnant with DJ.
George later died in 2019 at a Holiday Inn in Chesire after reportedly crushing a ball of cocaine in a sock and eating the contents.
