Yellowstone actor Kevin Costner, 67, has opened up on his blended family life with seven children aged between 38 and 12. The doting dad wanted to correct the assumption people have about his home life, noting that outside of work, he is simply “a father and a husband”.

Kevin and his wife Christine, 48, have three children together, Cayden, 15, Hayes, 13 and Grace, 12, making up the youngest of the Costner clan.

The actor also has four older children from previous relationships, Annie, 38, Lily, 36, Joe, 34 and Liam, 26.

Although to the world he is a revered actor, director, producer and musician, the star revealed that at home, he is just a parent hoping to help his children grow into the best people they can be.

He admitted that the “sad part” about being a parent is the time when they no longer need him.

Speaking to People about his parenting strategy, Kevin said: “You’ve got to get down on the ground and play with them.

“And you teach them to be independent — and the sad part about that is they become that.

“I’m like any other parent: I’m trying to figure it out.”

Kevin takes life day by day when he’s not working, saying his home is “like a river” that he just needs to “get into the flow of”.

Despite being one of the most famous men in the world, Kevin said he works just to be “a provider” for his family.

He said: “I’m a father and I’m a husband, but the world doesn’t revolve around me.

“When I’m not making a movie, I’m living and on the freeway with my wife, getting the kids to their stuff or I’m waiting for them to come out of a party.

“I’m just twiddling my thumbs. People have a wrong idea about how my life works.”

The actor still has ways of combining his work and home life, as his teenage son Hayes has a small role in his upcoming western, although Kevin admitted he had arranged this on purpose.

He said: “He’s very good but I kind of did it on purpose, so he could be hanging out with me.

“And the same thing for Cayden, same thing for Grace. ‘This is really neat. You should come be with me.’.”

Shortly after having Cayden, Kevin admitted to Parade in 2008 that he was unsure of his parenting skills and his lacking confidence was almost the end of his relationship with Christine.

He said: “Christine wanted a child, but I was afraid I couldn’t be an effective father. I woke up and thought, ‘Am I going to lose a beautiful woman who is willing to be with me to my very last breath because I am afraid to say yes to a child?’

“That’s all it took. … I decided that I was not going to miss out on love.”

Kevin’s eldest children Annie, Joe and Lily have also appeared alongside their father on-screen when they were young, slowly collecting acting credits in the same films.

Annie then transitioned to behind the camera, becoming a co-founder Sound Off Films in 2014 which has since produced the likes of Katy Perry’s Witness Tour documentary.

Lily has followed in her father’s musical footsteps and they have both worked on tracks together like their duet of Heaven’s Gate.

Joe is also behind the camera now as an audio engineer and production sound mixer.
