Queen’s funeral: Kirsty Young’s brilliant monologue
Broadcaster Kirsty Young, 54, has revealed that she was left wondering whether she’d get the call to anchor the King’s Coronation after featuring in the Queen’s state funeral coverage last September.
The veteran broadcaster, who will present the Coronation celebrations live from Buckingham Palace alongside Huw Edwards, will also be hosting the live broadcast of the Coronation Concert, which will feature acts such as Take That, Andrea Bocelli, Sir Bryn Terfel and Freya Ridings in the grounds of Windsor Castle the following day.
Young has been a staple on our screens and airwaves, hosting shows such as Crimewatch, Desert Island Discs and even the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee for years before stepping away after being diagnosed with chronic fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis.
Fibromyalgia, also called fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), is a chronic condition that can cause widespread pain, fatigue and sleep disorders. While rheumatoid arthritis causes stiffness, swelling and pain in the joints.
These two conditions are often linked and can leave sufferers unable to work or continue their normal lives.
Speaking to the Radio Times about her diagnosis, she explained that doctors had advised her to rest and remove all potential stress from her life.
This included presenting duties which led to her stepping away from Desert Island Discs, where she was a presenter for 12 years after taking over from Sue Lawley in 2006.
She went on to tell the publication how her illness had its own wearing effect on her, leaving her feeling daunted at the prospect of broadcasting live events, something she did in 2022 when she returned from a four-year break to host the Platinum Jubilee.

She said: “Life, in your 50s, gets very real, doesn’t it? You can dodge things in your 20s and 30s when everything is magnificent, but this is where growth comes.
“In your 50s, after you have gone through divorce or ill health, or both, you realise how levelling life is, and that there are things that come out of having to step away and reset. You look at life through a different prism.”
Kirsty has two daughters aged 17 and 23 with her husband, entrepreneur Nick Jones and is also a step-mum to his two adult children.
Speaking about her thoughts on the Coronation, she went on to add: “I’m there to put the event into words, and ask the questions that a typical viewer might ask.
“I can flesh out the whole thing, and make sense of it.”
Coverage of the King’s Coronation will be on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC iPlayer and starts from 7.30am on Saturday, May 6.
