Last month, Lady Gaga opened up with Vogue about how deeply affected she was by taking on the role of Patrizia Gucci in House of Gucci — and now, she's giving fans even deeper insight into how seriously she took her role and how she sees acting in general. In a sit-down with Variety, she explained that she had transformed herself into Patrizia and at one point, she needed medical help to feel safe within the project.
Gaga shared that she approached Gucci like her past role and that when she's acting, she's not just pretending, she's embodying a character fully, which could explain why she needed help during the production.
"I was the same way for A Star Is Born. I was always Ally," she said. "And for this, I was always Patrizia. I always spoke in my accent. And even if I was speaking about things that weren't related to the movie — I wasn't pretending that Maurizio was waiting for me downstairs — I was still living my life. I just lived it as her. I brought the darkness with me home because her life was dark."
"I had a psychiatric nurse with me towards the end of filming," she added. "I sort of felt like I had to. I felt that it was safer for me."
With roles in American Horror Story: Hotel and her Oscar-nominated turn as Ally in A Star Is Born, Gaga isn't unfamiliar with the spotlight, but there's clearly something different about filming movies, especially when she shared that other professionals shouldn't adopt her approach to creating art. And for her, it is art.
"I don't think that any actor should push themselves to that limit," she said. "And I ask myself all the time why I do that. I've done some pretty extreme art pieces throughout my career — the things I've put my body through, my mind. It's like a walnut of sadness in my stomach as I say this to you. I don't know why I'm like that. I think that the best answer I could give you is I have a sort of romantic relationship with suffering for your art that I developed as a young girl, and it just sometimes goes too far. And when it does go too far, it can be hard to reel it in on your own."
It wasn't all dour, however. Gaga said that she would love to do something lighter, but something tells us that she'd still fully commit to the process, whether it involved slapstick or serious chameleon-like transformations.
"I'd love to do a romantic comedy," she said. "For what it's worth, House of Gucci is still really funny."
