Legendary fashion designer Thierry Mugler dies aged 73

Fashion designer Thierry Mugler has died at the age of 73, it has been confirmed.

Mugler’s death was announced on Sunday in a post on his official Instagram account.

Alongside a black square, the message read: ‘#RIP We are devastated to announce the passing of Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler on Sunday January 23rd 2022. May his soul Rest In Peace.’

A cause of death was not provided.

Mugler, full name Manfred Thierry Mugler, worked with countless A-listers over the course of his stellar career, with names including: Madonna, Beyonce, David Bowie, Nicole Kidman, Sharon Stone, George Michael, Diana Ross, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Cardi B, Jerry Hall, Katy Perry, Linda Evangelista, Demi Moore, Megan Fox, Miley Cyrus, Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks, Reese Witherspoon, Robin Wright and Bella Hadid.

One of his most recent notable looks was worn by Kim Kardashian at the Met Gala in 2019, where she wore a skin tight latex dress that was made to look like she was dripping wet.

Tributes have begun to pour in for Mugler, with model Shanina Shaik commenting: ‘Omg 🥺🕊 an icon.’

Bella Hadid also reacted in shock and said simply: ‘Nonononono😔.’

Leomie Anderson stated: ‘What a loss 😢.’

Georgia May Foote wrote: ‘I cannot believe this is true sending love to you all. Thierry was a force of creativity and kindness 💔.’

Mugler, who was born in Strasbourg, France, moved to Paris when he was 24 and opened his first boutique in 1978. He became known for exaggerated 1940s-50s glamour looks with sharp tailoring.

The designer then rose to wider prominence in the 80s and 90s, during which time he created the famous black dress worn by Demi Moore in the 1993 movie Indecent Proposal.

Mugler officially retired from fashion designing in 2003 but made few exceptions for special projects, such as Kim’s Met Gala dress while he also worked as artistic designer for Beyonce, creating the looks on her I Am… World Tour in 2009.

In addition to his fashion work, Mugler became known for his fragrances with the ever-popular Angel launching in 2009, before going on to create a multi-million dollar collection of perfumes.
