Liam Payne and Tommy Fury’s baffling boxing pic explained after fan confusion

Fans of Liam Payne and Tommy Fury were sent into a frenzy yesterday as the duo hinted they could be facing off in a boxing ring – but it turns out the pair are going to be taking part in a different kind of match.

It has now been revealed that the two stars will compete on the football field as part of the Soccer Aid 2023 lineup.

Liam shared a promotional mock-up poster on Wednesday and sparked boxing rumours with the head-to-head design.

The image also revealed the then-mystery event would be taking place at Manchester's Old Trafford. The text read: "This summer. Announcement tomorrow."

One fan wrote: “What on earth is going on here?!?!”, while another wrote: “WHAT DID I OPEN INSTA TO."

Some people were more concerned about Tommy's future in boxing, as one fan questioned: “And this is going to make him a world champion?"

Thankfully, it's now been announced that the pair will not be fighting.

It turns out boxer Tommy, 23, and singer Liam, 29, are two of the big names on the 2023 Soccer Aid lineup.

Liam will be taking to the pitch for the England team alongside stars including Paddy McGuinness, Jermain Defoe, Sir Mo Farah, Jack Wilshere, Scarlette Douglas and Jill Scott, who will be captain.

Tommy will play on the Soccer Aid World XI along with Lee Mack, Steven Bartlett, Kem Cetinay, Masie Adam, Mo Gilligan, and Usain Bolt as the captain.

The annual charity football match, which raises funds for UNICEF, is set to take place on Sunday 11 June.

UNICEF works to provide children in 190 countries with clean water, food, vaccines, education, and protection from violence.

Robbie Williams launched Soccer Aid in 2006 and in 2021, the singer said: “It’s difficult to put into words the impact that £13 million could have for children around the world.

"It could help UNICEF to get life-saving food supplies moving again. It could help ensure that children are still able to receive their routine vaccinations.

"It could help get children back to school, back with their friends, back to just being kids again. The list goes on."
