Lil Durk and Gunna pay tribute to the late Virgil Abloh, the Off-White brand founder and artistic director of menswear at Louis Vuitton, through their music video for “What Happened to Virgil,” a song from Durk’s seventh studio album 7220.
The video begins with a quote from Abloh that reads, “Life is so short that you can’t waste even a day subscribing to what someone thinks you can do versus knowing what you can do.”
Lil Durk, who released the song in March in honor of Abloh, who passed away in November of 2021, released the video on Tuesday (April 12).
The Cole Bennett-directed video features features some striking color-saturated sets inspired by Abloh’s works during his lifetime. Lil Durk and Gunna are seen rapping on an airplane runway besides a jet painted with clouds. They are also seen performing from atop the red roof of a house and inside a warehouse filled with growing flowers.
“In loving memory of Virgil Abloh,” reads a message at the end of the video, which also pays respects to Lil Durk’s late brother D Thang and late rapper King Von.
“What Happened to Virgil,” which peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, stayed in the list for four weeks.
