A Line of Duty throwback snap has sent fans of the hit BBC series into a frenzy following a character revelation. The picture, which appeared on Twitter, features Vicky McClure, 37, who plays DS Kate Fleming, and corrupt policeman Ryan Pilkington, played by Gregory Piper, 23, which sent shockwaves through the Line of Duty fanbase, as social media users aired their disbelief at the old picture.

Shows how good an actor he is, looks completely different

The throwback photo, which had resurfaced, showed a baby-faced Gregory being hugged by youthful looking Vicky.

The post has so far received over 20,000 likes from fans of the show.

Alongside the caption, “How it started”, the photo featured the duo smiling together, as pictures from the most recent episode accompanied the caption, “How it’s going”.

The up to date snaps featured them both in the middle of a shootout on-screen – although it is yet to be determined who shot who at the end of the last episode.

Gregory has a long history in the BBC series, having first appeared in the initial season in 2012 as a boy on a BMX who stole phones for crime boss Tommy Hunter.

However, he resurfaced seven years later in 2019’s fifth season as a regular face of the organised crime gang before going on to play a (presumably corrupt) officer in the sixth series this year.

Fans flocked to the comments to air their views at the character revelation.

“Shows how good an actor he is, looks completely different,” one wrote.

Another fan added: “Great actor love to hate him.”

“No way!!!!!” another penned in disbelief.

A fourth social media user wrote: “He’s a b****y good actor @Vicky_McClure …. hope it’s just wounded rather dead.”

Last week’s Line of Duty episode left the plot line on a cliffhanger.

In the latest installment of the hit series, PC Pilkington is presumed the victim from the shootout, as his name is absent from the Cast & Crew list for next week’s instalment.

In an explosive final scene, shots were fired after DS Kate Fleming demanded that Ryan drop his weapon.

“Ryan, drop the gun” Kate asked, before he shouted back: “Drop yours!”

“Drop the gun,” Kate continued and Ryan said: “Drop it Kate, drop it, put your gun down, drop it.”

“One more chance Ryan, one more chance. No, drop the f***** gun,” viewers heard Kate holler, and then two shots were fired and the screen went black, before the credits rolled.

Viewers of the hit BBC show will have to wait until Sunday evening to find out who shot who and which direction the shots were fired in.

Nearly 10 million viewers tuned in to watch the police drama series last week.

Line of Duty airs Sunday evenings at 9pm on BBC One
