MAFS UK star Adrian says wedding day to Thomas was ‘a really difficult game of chess’

Married At First Sight UK’s latest series was another level of explosive, but Adrian Sanderson tells us we need to brace ourselves for the Christmas reunion show, promising there’ll be “bombshell after bombshell”.

Adrian, 37, who married outspoken scouser Thomas Hartley, 31, admitted he was nervous about reuniting with his co-stars, saying, “I walked in thinking, ‘Is it going to be the MAFS Christmas special
or the Game Of Thrones Christmas special?’”

When we catch up with the graphic designer, he fills us in on life since the show and although he says he has been “blocked” by Thomas, he still sings his ex’s praises. “He knew how to pick me up confidence wise. At any given moment, he made you feel good, proud and very happy,” he says.

Here, Adrian opens up about the dramatic reunion and reveals why the dynamic was never the same after “alpha males” Johnathan and Matt joined the experiment…

Hi, Adrian! What can you tell us about the reunion?

It’s everything you would expect from a raucous family Christmas. Everyone looks beautiful, the food is wonderful, the drinks are delicious – and the drama is plenty.

You are joined by some of the cast from the previous season. What was that like?

I didn’t really speak to them. We had a quick chat with Nikita Jasmine, and Alexis Economou was a sweetheart.

Were you nervous about getting together again?

Yes. I mean, would you feel comfortable walking back into that? Thankfully, I’m just used to sitting there amid the drama. I’m just like, “There’s a bomb, there’s a bomb and there’s another one.” It certainly brings the bombs.

How do you look back on the show now?

It was so exciting. It was such an amazing roller-coaster to be on. Not only did I get married, I got married to Tom. And there is never a dull moment with him.

How did you feel watching your wedding day back?

It was funny. I was a rabbit in headlights – I could see exactly what this man was the second I saw him. It was like playing a really difficult game of chess. You never quite know what you’re going to do next.

Are you on good terms with Thomas now?

One minute we’re the best of friends and by the afternoon, we’re blocked. And then it’s fine again. I’m going to have to wait and see for that one, to be honest.

Why do you think you were matched?

We’re so different. I had things that he needed. And maybe he had a couple of things that I needed. It did feel like I was his teacher at times.

What did you learn about yourself during that period?

Thomas was always supportive of me. Whenever I felt down about myself, he would iron that right out of me. He would say, “Don’t speak about yourself that way. Don’t think about yourself that way. You’re beautiful. You’re handsome. You’re gorgeous.”

Thomas was involved in a lot of the drama. Was that difficult for you?

Thomas is a pain in the ass. He’s a real fire starter. But he also could at times become the scapegoat. He’s loud, he’s brash, and he’s scouse. I didn’t always appreciate that he would instantly get the blame for things and I would defend him if necessary.

Were you surprised when Whitney and Matt were allowed to enter as a new couple?

I didn’t agree with it. We fought so hard for our marriages and we were all told from the beginning, “You need to make this work.” And all of us did. So for someone to go, “Actually, I want her here over there” – no, it wasn’t for me.

Did the group dynamic change?

The dynamic changed when the new couples came in halfway through. When Matt and Jonathan came in, it really changed for the guys. There was this new level of masculine energy and it was a bit too much for me. It felt very alpha male. It never felt like that when it was George, Duka and Kwame. And then, in come these brutes. We never got past that. It never went back.
