Marilyn Monroe is one of the world’s most iconic stars, a woman who is considered to be the personification of a blonde bombshell. Monroe passed away in a veil of mystery over four decades ago, but these days, she remains as interesting to fans around the world as when she was alive.
Monroe’s story is inspiring, tragic, and entertaining at times. And, as revealed in a 2010 interview with one of Monroe’s co-stars, Tony Curtis, she had a very mischievous side, which wasn’t often documented.
Marilyn Monroe rose to fame as a model
Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortensen in 1926. She had a difficult childhood and was raised primarily in a series of foster homes.
While working in a factory during World War II, the young woman was spotted by a photographer and embarked on a successful career as a model. Eventually, she took on the name Marilyn Monroe, which was deemed to be more appropriate for an up and coming “bombshell” film star.
In the mid-’50s, Monroe was one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood. She was well known for her light blonde hair, her curvy figure, and her signature makeup, including bright red lipstick.
Monroe’s films did well at the box-office, and she was praised for her comic timing, which can be seen in movies such as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How to Marry a Millionaire. Her personal life was widely publicized, with her marriages to Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller further cementing her status as a major celebrity.
‘Some Like it Hot’ is one of Marilyn Monroe’s most popular films
In 1958, at the height of her fame, Monroe acted in what would become one of her most popular films — Some Like it Hot. She played Sugar Kane, a singer and ukulele player who encounters two men, played by Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, who are forced to dress as women in order to escape some dangerous gangsters.
The film toyed with a lot of themes that were considered to be wildly taboo at the time, including cross-dressing and homosexuality. But, in spite of that, Some Like it Hot became a massive success at the box office and was nominated for six Academy Awards.
To this day, Some Like it Hot is a popular film, one that earns legions of new fans every year — thanks in no small part to the performance given by Monroe. Although she tragically died in 1962, Tony Curtis, who played Joe in the film, has spoken extensively about her work in the movie, and about the antics that went on behind the scenes.
What did Tony Curtis say Marilyn Monroe would do after filming scenes in ‘Some Like it Hot’?
In a 2010 interview, Curtis talked about the filming of Some Like it Hot. Curtis revealed that after filming scenes for the movie, he and Jack Lemmon would get out of the dresses that they wore for much of the movie and change into men’s clothing, while Monroe would change out of her formfitting costumes and “dress up like a guy.” The three would then often meet for drinks at a local restaurant and bar.
Monroe was well-documented to have a propensity for a drink or two and is notorious for loving champagne. Many of her films featured Monroe developing an affinity for alcohol, including her hit movie The Seven Year Itch. Sadly, fans never got to see what could have become of Monroe’s career, or the roles that she could have played, due to her untimely passing.
