Martina Navratilova says adoption is 'put on hold' after cancer battle

Martina Navratilova emotionally admits adoption plans with wife Julia Lemigova have been ‘put on hold’ after cancer battle: ‘I don’t think it’s going to happen’

Martina Navratilova revealed that the adoption plans she originally had with wife, Julia Lemigova, have been ‘put on hold’ following her recent breast and throat cancer battle.

The former professional tennis player, 66, opened up about her health scare and putting a pause on expanding her family during an upcoming Talk TV Piers Morgan Uncensored interview, which airs later this week on Tuesday.

The sports star, who revealed she was ‘cancer-free,’ emotionally expressed, ‘We were thinking about adopting but that’s definitely put on hold, and I don’t think it’s going to happen,’ she said.

The athlete’s wife of nearly ten years and Real Housewives Of Miami star also discussed their possible plans for adoption earlier in January.

‘I think it’s just too complicated and the energy, I only have so much right now,’ she admitted to Piers.

‘On hold’: Martina Navratilova, 66, revealed that the adoption plans she originally had with wife, Julia Lemigova, 50, have been ‘put on hold’ following her recent breast and throat cancer battle; the couple seen in 2022

The tennis star, who holds 59 major titles, admitted that adoption ‘was a nice thought for a while, but I think this has brought it into sharp focus.’

‘I’m not really the youngest anymore and I don’t want to be the grandmother on the playground,’ she stated, and then added, ‘Forget that part, there’s just not enough space I think for this to happen.’

Julia also gave an update on their plans to adopt during an appearance on the Real Housewives Of Miami reunion earlier last week, according to Bravo TV.

‘When you’re adopting a child, it has to be about the child,’ the former model expressed to Andy Cohen. ‘And, right now, it’s everything about Martina, and for her [to be] getting healthy.’

‘So, we’re putting it on hold,’ she continued. ‘You know, we were thinking [that at] any moment, the agency would call and give us happy news that we’re going to have a baby… Instead, we are fighting two cancers. Like one was not enough.’

During the latest season of Real Housewives Of Miami, Julia had gotten candid about her dream to adopt and could be seen opening up to close friend, Alexia Echevarria, in a mid-season trailer which was filmed before Martina’s cancer diagnosis.

‘I’ve started calling the adoption agencies,’ Lemigova tells Echevarria, who is clearly quite happy for the couple.

However, Lemigova adds, ‘not so successfully,’ though nothing more about the potential adoption was revealed in the trailer.

While adopting is not a strong possibility at the moment for the couple, Martina gave a positive update to Piers Morgan and revealed she was officially ‘cancer-free.’

The star added she had feared she ‘wouldn’t see next Christmas’ and that beating the disease was the ‘hardest thing ever’.

Navratilova said the double diagnosis had terrified her, but confirmed that ‘as far as they know I’m cancer-free’. She added that she only has two more weeks of radiation treatment radiotherapy on her breast and that after this ‘I should be good to go.’

The tennis ace announced she had been diagnosed with cancer at the start of the year, sparking an avalanche of support.

She had previously beaten breast cancer in 2010, but said she feared she might not see Christmas 2023 after it returned.

Navratilova confirmed she was diagnosed after doctors found an enlarged lymph node in her neck during the WTA finals in Fort Worth in November, with tests later confirming she had both breast and throat cancer.

Not easy: ‘I think it’s just too complicated and the energy, I only have so much right now,’ she admitted to Piers; the couple seen in 2019 in NYC

Other factors: ‘I’m not really the youngest anymore and I don’t want to be the grandmother on the playground,’ she stated; seen in September 2022 in NYC

After being diagnosed at the beginning of last December, she said: ‘[I’m thinking] I will see this Christmas but maybe not the next one.’

She added: ‘Who has two cancers at the same time? I was never an underachiever, but this is getting ridiculous.’

However, displaying the spirit that guided her to success on the tennis court, Navratilova defiantly said: ‘Giving up, giving in, stopping – that’s just not an option for me. You get on with it.’ She added: ‘Quitting is just not in my DNA.’

She said during the treatment, which took place while she wore a specially fitted mask, she was moved to tears as nurses played Elton John’s I’m Still Standing while she was in the hospital.

The singer had dedicated the song to the Czech-born athlete at a concert in Paris during the French Open in the 1980s.

In the interview, which will feature a video of Navratilova ringing a bell at the hospital to signal she was in the all clear, Navratilova says it was the toughest thing she has ever done.

However, she added she told herself to ‘suck it up’ after seeing children as young as six months old being treated for cancer in the same clinic.

Happy news! While adopting is not a strong possibility at the moment for the couple, Martina gave another positive update to Piers Morgan and revealed she was officially ‘cancer-free’; seen in September 2022 in NYC

Successful career: Her last win was at the 2006 US Open, when she won the mixed doubles with Bob Bryan just one month before turning 50 years old; seen in 1990

After Martina revealed she was diagnosed with stage 1 throat and breast cancer, she said in a statement to the Women’s Tennis Association, ‘This double whammy is serious but still fixable.’

‘I’m hoping for a favorable outcome. It’s going to stink for a while, but I’ll fight with all have I got,’ she added.

Navritalova had beaten cancer before, having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, and getting the tumor surgically removed after a routine mammogram.

Lemigova’s co-star Guerdy Abraira revealed to Daily Mail Australia that she reached out to her co-star as soon as she heard the news about Navratilova’s diagnosis at the time.

‘Things are happening on their end, I don’t know the exact details, but I know that they feel very confident,’ Abraira said.

In the course of her more than 40-year career, the Prague-born athlete won 59 Grand Slam titles, including 31 in women’s doubles and 10 in mixed doubles.

Her last win was at the 2006 US Open, when she won the mixed doubles with Bob Bryan just one month before turning 50 years old.
