Countryfile presenter Matt Baker, 43, has revealed he dealt with several “challenges” in trying to maintain a work-life balance as president of the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (NFYFC). The star, who left his role on The One Show behind last year in order to spend more time with his wife Nicola Baker and their two children, Luke and Molly, said he found it “difficult” to pursue to all of his commitments as president alongside staying present in his family life.

Matt was elected president of NFYFC in 2011, but went on to make the decision to step down from his role just two years later.

The former Blue Peter presenter admitted he found the position hard to keep up with while also keeping busy with his TV work, which included The One Show and Countryfile at the time.

“The challenges are trying to get to places and to see people and show my support,” Matt divulged in a recently unearthed interview.

He added: “Yes, I can have conversations with people wherever I go but I think the hardest thing has been knocking back all of the emails that have been coming in saying, ‘Will you come and see us?’

“That has been the hardest thing for me to see.”

Matt continued: “I’m sorry. I can’t get out there and see you because I’m so busy.

“I don’t want to play the old family card but I’m sure all the families will know I’ve got young children.”

“When I’m not at work I’m trying to see them. It gets very difficult,” Matt added to Farmers Guardian.

“So that without a doubt has been the biggest challenge,” he explained.

The NFYFC is one of the largest rural youth organisations in the UK, including 22,000 members and 598 clubs.

It allows young farmers to take part in various activities, from stock judging to floral arts.

There are also opportunities for members to get involved in national campaigns affecting agriculture.

Matt also cited his family life as the reason behind his departure from The One Show.

He said while announcing news of his exit on-air: “I’m continuing with Countryfile and BBC Sport and excited about other opportunities that come my way.

“But most of all I’m looking forward to having dinner with my family and being able to put my kids to bed.”

Elsewhere, Matt recently gave fans an insight into his marriage with wife Nicola in a sweet Instagram post.

Marking their anniversary in view of his 255,000 followers, the presenter penned: “Todays our anniversary..

“16yrs ago I married my soul mate and love of my life its been 23 yrs of happiness since we said hello!”(sic)

Matt also shared a collage of romantic moments that documented their relationship over the years.

The snaps included their wedding photo and several sweet selfies of the couple out and about.
