Matt Willis cant watch old TV interview: I was off my face on drugs

Busted star Matt Willis has opened up and said he finds it difficult to watch his old interviews because he was “off my face”.

The bass player and singer, who recently had his 40th birthday celebrations, opened up in the new BBC documentary Matt Willis: Fighting Addiction where he said he can’t watch an interview from two decades ago with Jonathan Ross.

In 2004, Matt – along with his bandmates James Bourne and Charlie Simpson – appeared on Friday Night With Jonathan Ross to chat about their upcoming music.

In the documentary, the star goes into detail about the pressures and difficulties of getting famous at a young age and looking back at that particular interview Matt said: “That was hardest for me to watch because I’m looking at myself and I’m 20 years old or something and I’m obviously off my face.”

He continued: “It’s not rock ‘n’ roll, it wasn’t glamorous, it was really sad."

Just one year after the interview, Matt was admitted to London's Priory Hospital for three weeks to get help treating his alcoholism.

However, it didn’t stop there and Matt has ended up in rehab four times in the last two decades.

The bass player was clean for eight years before relapsing again in 2016 when Busted went on a reunion tour. But it wasn’t booze he was hooked on then, it was the class A drug cocaine.

Matt revealed in the documentary: “After one of our shows, someone offered me a line of coke, and I was like, ‘Oh, cocaine wasn’t a problem for me, alcohol was my downfall.

“Within a month I was doing six grams on my own every f**king day and not coming home until three in the morning pretending I was working on an album, which I wasn’t really writing, I was making s**t music in the studio doing coke.”

Matt admitted that he is scared of relapsing again, he said: “I'm terrified of relapse. If I do that again everything will end.”

He is currently preparing to go on tour with Busted later in the year and although he is worried about relapsing, he doesn’t want to let his bandmates down.

“It is a job, I have to turn up,” he said.

Matt also revealed that his bandmates are committed to keeping him clean and supporting him on the journey.

“Two of the people I work with every day love me,” says Matt. “And I love them.”

Matt said his family, including his wife Emma, will also play a big part in supporting him.

Matt said: “I am going to travel a lot with my family, they’re going to come as much as they can.

“And I have very different parameters which I live by now. The morning is really important for me. I want to go to bed because I want to get that part of my day, which I really cherish. When I come offstage, I hang out for half an hour, then I go back to my room, watch something, put a sleep story on and I’m gone.”
