Friends actor Matthew Perry has shared his story about battling a drink and drug problem during the height of his fame in the early 2000s. Most recently, the 53-year-old was left in a coma for two weeks and had a two percent survival rate after opioids caused his colon to burst in 2018.

In a trailer for an upcoming interview with Dianne Sawyer, Matthew told the journalist his co-star Jennifer Aniston, 53, confronted him over his addiction and supported him throughout his recovery.

He began by saying: “Secrets kill you. Secrets kill people like me.

“At the time I should have been the toast of the town, I was in a dark room meeting nothing but drug dealers and completely alone.”

Of the substances he was taking, he listed “methadone, Xanax, full quart of vodka” and “55 Vicodin a day.”

Matthew went on to say Jennifer confronted him about his addiction during a day of filming.

Dianne then quoted the actress as saying to him: “We know you’re drinking.”

Recalling the moment, he replied: “Imagine how scary a moment that was.”

He went on to say of his co-star: “She was the one that reached out the most, I’m really grateful to her for that.”

Matthew opened up about his addiction in his new memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.

In the book, he revealed how he spent around “$9 million trying to get sober”.

He added: “I would fake back injuries. I would fake migraine headaches. I had eight doctors going at the same time.

“I would wake up and have to get 55 Vicodin that day, and figure out how to do it. When you’re a drug addict, it’s all math.

“I go to this place, and I need to take three. And then I go to this place, and I’m going to take five because I’m going to be there longer.”

Matthew said he wasn’t taking drugs to “feel high or to feel good” but to sit down and watch a movie.

“That was heaven for me. It no longer is,” he added.

The actor went on to say he still had a number of scars from multiple surgeries over the years.

At one point, he had to use a colostomy bag for nine months.

The actor was one of the six stars of the show which ran from 1994 to 2004.

His co-stars are Jennifer, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer and Matt LeBlanc.

The team reunited last year for a special reunion, in which they told secrets about their time on the show.
