Meghan Markle offers insight into California house – from palm trees to fixing pipes

Meghan Marklegave a glimpse into her life in Montecito, California as she opened up in a rare interview conducted in her home.

The Duchess of Sussex, 41, spoke about her time in theRoyal Familyand what she andPrince Harryare enjoying about their life in California.

Meghan opened up toThe Cutfrom inside her home, which was described as “climate-controlled and high-ceilinged and sun-dappled and perfectly marshmallowy”.

She and Harry, 37, are, according to the piece, residing in a home that is reminiscent of a Tuscan villa: “The Montecito house is the kind of big that startles you into remembering that unimaginable wealth is actually someone’s daily reality.”

Meghan told the publication that a lot went into them purchasing the $14million home.

“We didn’t have jobs, so we just were not going to come and see this house. It wasn’t possible. It’s like when I was younger and you’re window shopping – it’s like, I don’t want to go and look at all the things that I can’t afford. That doesn’t feel good”.

The family’s home now features two massive palm trees and according to the interview, Harry was wowed by them.

Meghan said: “One of the first things my husband saw when we walked around the house was those two palm trees.

“See how they’re connected at the bottom? He goes, ‘My love, it’s us.’ And now every day when Archie goes by us, he says, ‘Hi, Momma. Hi, Papa.’ ”

While Harry added that the house has needed some work: “We’re fixing all these things, the pipes, but that’s a whole story in itself.”

However, it’s very well decorated and friend and actor Tyler Perry, who previously lent Harry and Meghan his home to stay in when they first went to California, has gifted the pair a “massive grand piano” as a housewarming present.

Elsewhere in the interview, she teased an upcoming Netflix drama about her and Prince Harry, who are set to visit the UK next month, saying: “The piece of my life I haven’t been able to share, that people haven’t been able to see, is our love story."

Meghan and Prince Harry stepped back from royal life in early 2020, with the pair going onto launch their company Archewell later that year – a company that features a non-profit arm as well as sub-divisions for their TV and audio work, including Meghan's new podcast Archetypes.

She opens up on being able to run her own projects away from the Royal Family, saying: “When the media has shaped the story around you, it’s really nice to be able to tell your own story".
