Meghan Markle reveals childhood love of Archie comics featuring redhead boy

Meghan Markle has revealed how her childhood love for comics appears to have foreshadowed aspects of her adult life, while insisting she didn't intentionally name her son after one of her favourite characters.

Meghan, 41, delves into what life was like when she was growing up in her latest Archetypes podcast with Mindy Kaling.

The duo delight listeners with talk of their favourite books as kids, which include the novel Harriet the Spy and Archie.

Originally known as America’s Typical Teenager, Archie Andrews is a klutzy-but-kind nature character who also happens to have red hair and freckles just like the Duke of Sussex.

The comic book strip has been transformed for a modern-day audience with Riverdale, a subversive take on Archie and his friends as they explore the mysteries of what lies beneath Riverdale's wholesome facade.

During the podcast, Mindy says that the comics "never got too sexy”, before she jovially draws Meghan's attention to the likeness of her husband Prince Harry to the comic’s lothario by gushing: "Well, you like redheads.”

Sensing the joke, the Duchess wittily responds: "I do and I like the name Archie”.

Meghan adds: "I was alone so much as a child, and also a latchkey kid and I think I read a lot of Archie comic books.

"Ironically, my son is not named after Archie comic books but I loved them and collected them."

The mum of two also spoke about her parents and the life she wished she had whilst growing up.

"My parents split up when I was around two or three years old and I always wanted this sort of cookie cutter, looking perfect life, and you looked at that and I romanticised it," she told Mindy.

"It's all part of the things that make you have this idea of what you want your life to be like when I grow up.

"But I always thought 'I'm way more Betty than Veronica' and 'am I going to get the guy one day?' and I was the smart one, not the pretty one.

"All this stuff was wrapped up in reading Archie comic books and I think it was aspirational in some ways."

The Duchess also detailed how she planned her wedding at 14, for her religious studies assignment at her Catholic school.

She talked of wanting a wedding in the “Bel Air Hotel” with a “Swan Lake'', adding that she had seen the strapless bridal gown in a magazine.
