Melissa McCarthy Dishes on Her Ursula & What It Was Like Singing ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’

Melissa McCarthy is opening up about taking on the iconic role of Ursula in the upcoming live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid.

The actress made an appearance on Good Morning America on Tuesday (April 25) where she talked about her version of the character and more.

“It was a crazy fever dream. It’s just ridiculous,” she said. “It is weirdly, it’s the movie that I have watched more, more than any other movie in the world. I was a nanny, so we watched it for like two years, every night, that’s what we wanted to watch. So I have an absolute love for the movie and for Ursula, so to get to step into those tentacles was really something.”

Melissa also opened up about singing Ursula’s song “Poor Unfortunate Souls” and following in the footsteps of the original voice actress.

Check out what Melissa said inside…

“To walk in anything Pat Carroll [original voice of Ursula] has done and you’re already just like,” she said, bowing. “Let me just try and do it some justice. It was so fun though because it is not my forte for sure, so I really nerdishly practiced really hard and getting to sing with that orchestra was… I mean, I think it’s a once in a lifetime thing. It was ridiculously fun and when I finished I cried. Only because I didn’t get to go to practice [anymore]. I called it singing practice.”

On the transformation and her inspiration, Melissa shared, “The best of Ursula is such a dishy broad, and all of my favorite drag queens rolled up into one delicious cocktail. It’s everything I love about women who are like, ‘This is what I am. I embrace it. You can embrace it, or I don’t care,’ which is always a very fun thing. She’s just like, everything about her is, she just kind of melts into it. And it was just a blast.”
