The Met Gala is one of the biggest events in the annual fashion calendar and this year’s is expected to be no exception.
As is the case every year, the Costume Institute has enlisted a host of celebrities to co-chair the event, and this year Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively will take the reins.
Regina King and Lin-Manuel Miranda will serve as the official co-chairs and hosts.
Organised annually by Vogue and held in the Metropolitan Musem of Art, the event marks the beginning of the Costume Institute’s fashion exhibit, which is held annually.
This year’s theme is Gilded Glamour, as well as White Tie, which aims to be a reference to old-style 19th-century industrialisation, as well as highlighting issues such as the haves and have nots.
The Gala first started in 1948, and it was exclusively attended by the upper echelons of New York society, from fashion designers to the city’s elite and most wealthy.
Now, people from the world of show business, fashion and business, and beyond, can attend.
Here’s everything you need to know about who might attend this year’s star-studded event.
Which celebrities could attend this year’s Met Gala?
As is the case every year, the exact guest list for the event is unknown, however, there are a number of predictions we can make about who will attend.
The tradition is that each year a selection of celebrities and designers are selected to co-chair the event alongside Anna Wintour.
In 2021, Anna selected actor Timothée, musician Billie Eilish, poet Amanda Gorman, and tennis star Naomi Osaka as hosts, with honorary hosts chairs including Tom Ford and Adam Mosseri.
Anna has the final say over every invitation to the event and stars expected to be in attendance include Dakota Johnson, Eileen Gu, Megan Thee Stallion and newly married Brooklyn and Nicola Peltz Beckham.
One celebrity who’s rumoured to definitely attend this year’s event is Taylor Swift, but she hasn’t been seen walking up the steps since 2016, so it’s unsure whether she will be in attendance this year.
Other names expected to attend this year include Rihanna, the KarJenners, newly engaged Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, and Megan Thee Stallion, to start.
Katy Perry is thought to be taking a night off from her Vegas residency to attend this year, teasing Page Six that she’s ‘going to play a whole different card.’
Adele, Kim Kardashian and boyfriend Pete Davidson, Billie Eilish and brother Finneas, actors Timothee Chalamet, Kristen Stewart and Gemma Chan, and musicians Harry Styles, Taylor Swift, Hailee Steinfeld and Camila Cabello have all reportedly been invited to this year’s event.
Directors Sofia Coppola, Chloé Zhao and Martin Scorsese are also expected to be in attendance due to being a part of the inside show, which is not televised and is kept exclusive to guests.
How many people attend the Met Gala?
The Met Gala usually hosts around 600 attendees. However, a much smaller number attended in 2021 due to the ongoing pandemic.
What is the Met Gala 2022 theme?
This year’s theme is Gilded Glamour, and speaking about it to Vogue, Andrew Bolton, head curator of the Museum of Modern Art’s Costume Institute, said the fashion stories displayed across the 13-room exhibition will ‘really reflect the evolution of American style, but they also explore the work of individual tailors, dress-makers, and designer.’
White Tie is similar to Black Tie, however, White Tie is the most elite form of dress, and is often adopted by the highest calibre of guests including royalty.
