Michael Owen, 42, has been revealed tonight as the Doughnuts on The Masked Singer. The former Manchester United star took to Twitter after the instalment aired to reach out to viewers.

He was the second star to be booted off in a double elimination after singing Everybody Get Up by the boyband Five.

In view of his 3.7 million followers, Michael apologised for “burning” fans’ ears with his singing.

In the same tweet, the footballer confessed he had fun taking part in the ITV singing show.

He wrote: “Finally I can apologise for burning your ears these last few weeks.

“My kids badgered me into doing @MaskedSingerUK but I have to say it was a great experience and a whole lot of fun.

“Still can’t believe I got past round one!”

Fans of the former Liverpool striker responded to his tweet as they reacted to his elimination.

Twitter user Babyfruitella typed: “We guessed you from the first week.

“Absolute legend! You’ve gone up soooo much in my estimations!!!”

Philsainsbury wrote: “@themichaelowen congratulations on your performance.

“It reminds me of the time I sang Chesney Hawkes ‘I am the one and only’ at karaoke competition @Butlins minehead in 2006.”

RedDevilWazza penned: “Your voice was just so clearly you, it’s been fun laughing at the people who couldn’t tell it was you!

“Well done Michael, think you probably won a few new fans as you were a good laugh.”

Some viewers had previously theorised the football star was hiding underneath the Donuts costume.

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, vocal coach Moz Ali of The Wirral Music Tuition agreed with fan speculation that it could be Michael behind the mask.

“Everyone’s deduced he’s a sports person,” Moz stated.

“I’m on side with that as well. But, I don’t know if that’s more because I really want it to be Michael Owen,” he continued.

Judging Doughnuts’ performances, Moz said: “He is not a singer.

“That’s definitely someone that I can say is not a professional singer.

“I’d be very impressed if it was a professional singer and they’d just disguised their voice.”
