Michelle Heaton on her surgery fear: ‘I was worried I’d get addicted to painkillers’

Michelle Heaton has admitted she worried about getting "addicted" to pain killers after her recent surgery.

The Liberty X star, 42, has been open about her recovery from alcohol and drug addiction and has been sober since April 2021.

In February 2022, Michelle underwent reconstruction surgery after her doctor was worried her breast implants could be leaking or possibly even been ruptured.

And before the op, Michelle admitted that she did think about whether she would get addicted to the pain killers.

Speaking exclusively with OK! she said: "At one point I thought, 'I’m an addict – I know that, I’ve dealt with that and I’m stronger than ever. But hang on, I haven’t been addicted to painkillers yet.'"

Michelle continued: "We use the word 'yet' in recovery, because I never did that… yet. I wasn’t addicted to opioids. Now, two weeks later, I can safely say it hasn’t happened yet."

Still, the star said it "does play on your brain."

She added: "I had to do a lot of work around myself and my growth to understand that I don’t want to have to take anything stronger than I’ve already got. These are things that other people wouldn’t have clocked going into an op like this."

Michelle showed off the results of her recent surgery in this week's new! magazine, saying that the operation came about after OK! readers noticed something wasn't looking quite right after she appeared in a video alongside husband Hugh Hanley in December.

After noticing fan comments about the appearance of her boobs, Michelle checked with her doctor and was told she could need more surgery.

Michelle has been sober since she entered The Priory last April, and says she works on maintaining it every day.

"I’ve used those tools that I learnt in recovery every day. I’ve got my meetings," Michelle explained, "We call it a higher power, which is spiritual, not religious, and it watches over me. Every day, I work at it.

"I do a gratitude list. The temptation hasn’t been there, as my obsession with drink and drugs has been removed."
