Monty Don, 65, tweeted an article titled “How a British Gardening Show Got People Through The Pandemic” written by the NY Times, in reference to his BBC show Gardeners’ World on Friday. Social media users from both the UK and America were quick to praise the horticulturalist for his “invaluable” TV shows, but one social media user confessed they nearly stopped reading the piece because of the portrayal of the UK as “tiresome.”

Many Americans would barely be able to identify Britain on a map

Hitting back at the comment, Monty questioned how much Americans cared about British culture and whether they knew where the country is located.

He said: “Many Americans would barely be able to identify Britain on a map, let alone care about the niceties of correct nomenclature.

“We do not feature significantly on their horizon.”

However, he ended the tweet by revelling in the fact that his show is enjoyed by US viewers: “I am just delighted that the programme is being shown in the U.S. and pieces like this being written.”

The tweet in question which provoked the BBC presenter’s comment started by claiming they nearly gave up on the article.

The comment read: “I almost stopped reading after the first paragraph.

“The usual conflation of England, Britain and the UK gets tiresome.”

However, the social media user revealed thy made a U-turn and read the story in praise of the gardening expert.

“Anyway I kept reading and I’m glad I did. How does it feel to be called Mr Don? That pic of you from ’83 is priceless!”

In a recent interview with The Radio Times Monty admitted he’d been told time and time again that the show was a lifesaver, but he wasn’t convinced at first.

He said: “People have said that. My reaction to that is two-fold.

“On an immediate level I feel like, ‘Oh, come off it.’

“On another level it’s, ‘OK, let’s accept that as a fact, a truth.’”

Monty continued: “That’s quite a responsibility. That means I’d better look you in the eye and be straight with you.”

Fans of the horticulturalist from across the pond were quick to comment on his tweet reassuring him that they found the programme to have been “invaluable” over the past year.

One comment said: “I’m an American and can say that’s true for some but hopefully not ‘many.’

“I’m quite the opposite and think there are many just like myself here. Your show has been invaluable to me and my mental health thank you!”

A second penned: “Not so. Gardeners World features significantly on our horizons as do you…and Nelly, Nigel (RIP), Carole, Adam, Francis, Joe, and all the GW presenters and crew.

“Truly a balm for the soul. Thank you from Baltimore, Maryland, USA.”

While a third added: “Writing this as a Yankee; you have no idea how much of my family’s horizon you currently make up Monty.”

However, his tweet wasn’t well received by some who asked whether his comment about the USA was “necessary”.

One social media user wrote: “Ouch! Was that gratuitous bit of American bashing necessary?”

Another added: “Not true. CAN identify Britain on a map and you DO feature significantly on our horizon.”
