Mystery surrounding Harry’s 4-book deal as it becomes UK’s biggest selling memoir ever

Prince Harry's explosive memoir Spare has become the fastest-selling non-fiction book in the UK, selling over 750,000 copies across all formats since its release on 10 January.

Nearly 470,000 print copies of Spare were sold, which is worth around £6.6 million in sales, according to official figures form Nielsen BookScan.

Neilsen, Guinness World Records and Waterstones have since confirmed that Spare is the fastest-selling non-fiction title since UK records started back in 1998. It is also the sixth fastest-selling book of all time.

The Duke of Sussex secured a £36.8m four-book deal with publisher Penguin Random House in 2020, leaving many wondering what could be set to follow after the release of Spare.

Harry signed the deal alongside his wife Meghan Markle, 41, and sources recently claimed that Meghan's own autobiography could be in the pipeline.

According to Express.co.uk, a senior industry source has said bosses at Penguin Random House are so amazed by the success of Spare, that "the heat is on" to get the Duchess' story made into a book.

The insider told the publication: “Nobody expected sales figures like the ones we are seeing. Harry could easily overtake the combined book sales of the Obamas, the company’s current joint best-selling authors.

"That’s why the heat is on to get Meghan’s version of events – both with the Royal Family and her own family members in America – out there in print as soon as possible, ideally early next year to pick-up sales when demand for Spare slows down.”

As well as their own autobiographies, it's been reported that Harry and Meghan are believed to working on a book about "leadership and philanthropy" together, and Meghan is working on a "wellness" project.

However, there could also be a Spare 2.0 in the pipeline as Harry has revealed that his memoir was originally 800 pages but was cut down to 400, and could have "been two books".

Speaking about the immense success of Spare and what could be next, Tom Tivnan, Managing Editor of The Bookseller, told The Mirror: "I believe Harry does have a four-book deal, but it is shrouded in secrecy. That's what's rumoured.

"I don't know if he'll do something like this again – a memoir so personal – but probably something very worthy and princely, let's say. The sales will give the publisher something to think about, and maybe they'll follow up harder for a second book."

Tom also added that he thinks the leaked extracts from the book helped to "wet the public's appetite" prior to its release, and Meghan and Harry's Netflix docuseries will have helped to increase sales.

According to Penguin Random House, the English language edition of Spare sold more than 1,430,000 units in all formats and editions in the United States, Canada and the UK when it first hit bookshop shelves.
