Naga Munchetty, 45, stunned one listener of her Radio 5 Live show after she openly admitted she isn’t a fan of small talk. The BBC Breakfast host talks to people, some who are strangers, daily as part of her job, so it came as a real shock that she cringes at the thought of speaking to someone she’s never going to see again.
I wondered how can you? When you’ve got such an interest and love for people?
Radio 5 Live caller
While chatting to a listener who had different views, they revealed they were “gobsmacked” after finding out Naga actually disliked making conversation with people she doesn’t know.
The caller recalled a time where she and her mother were in a cafe and got speaking to a random lady, and afterwards she asked her mum whether she knew her.
“She said, ‘No I didn’t know her, but that might have been the only person that she gets to speak to today,'” the listener fondly remembered her mum’s kind nature.
Naga quickly interrupted: “That’s different, that’s different!
“That’s because there’s a purpose, I would do that too…” she insisted.
But the caller cut her off, adamant that the radio presenter was contradicting herself.
“But that’s small talk?” she exclaimed.
“When you were talking earlier about hating small talk, I was honestly gobsmacked.
“I wondered how can you? When you’ve got such an interest and love for people?”
They added: “And the sometimes the small talk isn’t about you, it’s about making that other person feel better or engaged!”
Naga sighed as she replied: “Again, that’s my my point.
“If it’s got a purpose, it’s easier.”
The BBC star was also branded a “grumpy guts” by another fan, after she agreed with a message from a listener about ending phone calls that exceed one minute.
Naga moved onto read out a second text, but was a left chuckling by the contents.
“I wish this person had put their name to this because I actually agree with them,” she giggled.

“‘Gosh, you sound like a real grumpy guts,'” the presenter read aloud.
“‘Absolutely everyone has an interesting story, you’ve just got to ask the right questions.'”
After finishing the message, Naga realised her point may have come across the wrong way and been misconstrued.
“I don’t think I’m explaining myself properly here,” she sighed.
“Don’t get me wrong, I love my job and I love hearing about interesting people and facilitating the conversation so these brilliant stories come out.
“But what I don’t enjoy is talking to some people who I know I’m not going to see again!”
She revealed she never wants to tell people who fall into that category too much about herself, because she doesn’t consider herself an interesting person.
“I just feel it’s all an effort, all that small talk, and I don’t think I’m alone,” she acknowledged.
BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am one BBC One and Naga’s Radio 5 Live slot begins at 10am.
