Netflix has commenced filming on the sixth season of The Crown, and new pictures show the show filming scenes portraying the lead-up to the car crash that killed Princess Diana in August 1997.
Princess Diana died on 31 August 1997 in a car crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris while the driver was fleeing the paparazzi. The crash tragically resulted in the deaths of Diana, her partner Dodi Fayed, and the driver, Henri Paul.
Diana's bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones suffered a serious head injury but did survive the crash.
Now Netflix has recreated these horrifying scenes for the sixth season of The Crown.
Photos from filming show the car being chased by hoards of paparazzi on motorbikes as they head towards the tunnel.
Netflix previously said the series will show the lead-up to the fatal incident as well as its aftermath, but not the crash itself.
Recently the popular show filmed a recreation of Princess Diana's funeral, which was viewed by 32.10 million people worldwide.
The funeral scenes have been lambasted by people close to the royal family, with some calling the show "crude and cruel."
Some royal fans have also joined the critics in their views, with one person on Twitter writing: "I think it’s disgraceful. The amount of people this will hurt who knew/loved Diana is horrendous."
Another argued: "It's absolutely disgusting to film this scene. Dianas poor boys having this played out on TV will be traumatic for them."
Former chef to the royal family Darren McGrady has added his voice to the critics, taking to Twitter to add that he's not looking forward to the new season of the show.
He wrote: "I was there for Princess Diana’s funeral and was in The Queens private apartment helping her move personal belongings during the Windsor Castle fire. I’m not looking forward to the new season of The Crown."
The fifth season of The Crown will release on Netflix on Wednesday 9 November.
The new series will start in 1991 and cover a number of controversies that surrounded the royal family between then and 1997.
Included in this will be scenes surrounding the affair between now King Charles and Camilla, the new Queen Consort.
A teaser clip for the upcoming series also shows Diana's infamous Panorama interview with former BBC journalist Martin Bashir, played by Prasanna Puwanarajah.
Netflix previously said it had included the interview between Diana and Bashir within the series, given the pivotal part it played during the period, and that the series will reflect what is now known about how it was obtained.
A spokeswoman for The Crown also previously said: “The Crown has always been presented as a drama based on historical events.
“Series five is a fictional dramatisation, imagining what could have happened behind closed doors during a significant decade for the royal family – one that has already been scrutinised and well-documented by journalists, biographers and historians.”
