Today in Everyone’s Confused About Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s Netflix Docuseries, Page Six sources are out here pushing back on Deadline’s claims that the show is being postponed due to Netflix being “rattled” by backlash against The Crown.
To catch you up real quick, yesterday (October 17), Deadline reported that backlash to alleged inaccuracies in The Crown’s upcoming season had caused Netflix to delay the Sussexes’ docuseries until 2023. As a source put it, “They’re rattled at Netflix, and they blinked first and decided to postpone the documentary.” Meanwhile, Netflix gave a statement to the outlet saying ”there’s never been any documentary from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex confirmed.”
Cool cool cool, but now multiple sources have told Page Six that the Sussexes’ yet-to-be-confirmed docuseries is still set to premiere this year, with a December release date in mind. As one “highly-placed industry insider” told the outlet, “As far as I am aware, the docu-series is still going ahead later this year.”
Page Six previously reported that Meghan and Harry were hoping to make some last minute changes to the doc, with one source saying “Harry and Meghan are having second thoughts on their own story, on their own project,” and another adding, “Harry and Meghan are panicked about trying to tone down even the most basic language. But it’s their story, from their own mouths.”
“They’ve made significant requests to walk back content they themselves have provided — to the extent that some Netflix staff believe, if granted, it will effectively shelve the project indefinitely,” an insider said. “Netflix is standing by the filmmakers.”
I mean…as Netflix themselves noted this show hasn’t even been confirmed yet—so kinda makes sense that things are seemingly up in the air when it comes to a premiere date!
