This year has already proven to be an exciting one for teen queen Olivia Rodrigo. The 19-year-old was just named Billboard’s Woman of the Year and is set to embark on her first-ever tour. Her highly anticipated sophomore album is also in the works — the girl can do it all! Olivia talked all about her new projects, including the upcoming Disney Plus documentary, Driving Home 2 U, in a new interview with Rolling Stone and even revealed some surprises that may come along the way.
Throughout the film, viewers will follow the Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter as she takes a road trip from Salt Lake City, where she began writing her debut album, to Los Angeles. Olivia breaks down the process of working on her first album along the way through new live arrangements of her songs, intimate interviews, and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from the recording studio where it all happened. Per Rolling Stone, Liv and her producer, Dan Nigro, installed a GoPro camera in his studio shortly after they released her no. 1 hit, “Drivers License.” The footage captures them “picking apart arrangements, lyrics, and song order as it gets down to the wire.”
“When you put out an album or put out singles, they take on an entirely different meaning. I think that’s the beautiful part about music,” Olivia told the outlet. “It was really interesting to go back and watch footage of when the songs are kind of beginning to form. I think there’s magic to that creative process, and they’re really fond memories in my life.”
Olivia, who released her music during the COVID-19 lockdown, is performing her first live shows for fans a few days after Driving Home 2 U is released. “I’m excited to see my fans in real life. There’s something so special about that that can’t be captured by social media and technology,” she said of the new experience.
Liv also provided fans with a treat at the end of Driving Home 2 U to celebrate the (well, almost) end of her SOUR era – an unreleased song. The iPhone demo was originally scrapped, but Olivia revealed that it’s still in progress and doesn’t have an official name yet. “I was listening to some of [my unreleased songs] and heard it and thought, ‘Oh, it’s kind of good!’ With the film, I wanted people to have a new bit of SOUR content with it.”
It’s Olivia’s world, and I am so happy to be living in it with a new song coming soon.
