Oti Mabuse, 30, joined Strictly Come Dancing in 2015 and has gone on to become a fan favourite. Despite her success in the series over the years, the professional dancer endured a tough process to land the job with the BBC.
Before Oti joined the UK version of Strictly, she was previously a professional dancer on the German programme, Let’s Dance.
After appearing on the show alongside her husband Marius Iepure for one season, she was later scouted for the UK series by producers.
Oti has now spoken out on the “tough” audition process she had to go through, while chatting to former Strictly star Joanne Clifton and her co-star Tjaša Vulič on their podcast She’s Just a Dancer.
The dancer began: “I went through a really tough process. I had to send in videos, I had to audition, I had to teach a beginner in 20 minutes Latin and Ballroom and send in photos.
“I had like three auditions to see if I could speak English or not.”
The Strictly star continued: “They grilled me.
“They were like, ‘How many people do you know on the show?’ Luckily, I knew you [Joanne] and Kev [Kevin Clifton] as well Aljaž [Škorjanec] – I had known him.
“They asked me if I knew the dancers on the show, I had to watch the show and pretend like I knew [the] dancers.
“I mean I did know the dancers, we did watch the show, luckily, and so my audition process was really hard, and then I made it on.”
Since joining the show, Oti has made Strictly history after winning the Glitterball trophy two consecutive years.
Oti’s first win came with former Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher in 2019.
While he was not part of the initial Strictly line up, he entered the competition after Made In Chelsea star Jamie Laing injured his foot during the launch.

Oti was victorious for a second time in December, after partnering up with comedian Bill Bailey.
As the pair were announced winners of the 2020 series, she spoke of the love she has for Bill.
She said: “Bill, I think you are amazing, remarkable Bill Mark Bailey.
“You just put your heart into everything, your soul into everything, you’re in your world but I love your world.
“Thank you for being a friend, a father figure to me, a brother and for this!”
She later went on to celebrate with her 569,000 followers on Instagram, saying: “One magical night.
“I can’t find the words to describe how grateful I am.
“At the beginning of the year my goal was to humble myself with everything I experience this year and boy did this close my year on a high with the best friend I made in @billbaileyofficial but we didn’t make it alone.”
