Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid lead stars reacting to Liz Truss resigning as prime minister

Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid are among the TV and music stars who have reacted to Liz Truss’ resignation as prime minister after just 45 days.

Ms Truss announced she was stepping down in a statement outside Downing Street on Thursday afternoon after her chaotic tenure saw her lose the confidence of the public and her own Tory MPs as economic markets crashed.

She will be the shortest-serving prime minister in UK history.

Celebrities from across TV and music have been quick to Tweet their reaction to her resignation – with Piers Morgan describing it as a “shambles”.

He posted: “It’s over. Liz Truss is resigning and will become shortest-serving Prime Minister in British history. What an absolute shambles.”

His former Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid tweeted: "The U-turn Prime Minister. Yesterday: I’m a fighter not a quitter. Today: quits."

Meanwhile, The Wanted singer Nathan Sykes, actress Tamzin Outhwaite and former TOWIE star Charlie King all called for a general election so the public could decide the next prime minister.

Nathan tweeted: “How many Prime Ministers is too many Prime Ministers before the country gets to elect a Prime Minister that they have actually voted for?”

Tamzin posted: “General Election anyone?”

Meanwhile Charlie tweeted: “General election time? I think so.”

Comedian John Bishop was particularly angered – tweeting: “WTF !!! And they think they can just get another Tory in !!! Unacceptable.”

Other stars found the funny side of Truss’ short-lived stint in 10 Downing Street.

Shaughna Phillips, star of Love Island season six, tweeted: “No this is so embarrassing.”

She added: “I want to see footage of Liz Truss telling King Charles she’s resigning lol. You just know the king of shade had something to say.”

Pop star Ella Eyre posted: “LOOOOOOOOOL liz.” She added: “45 days of comedy.”

Pop twins Jedward tweeted: “Liz truss is no longer prime minister byeeeee.”

Love Island narrator Iain Stirling weighed in with a joke too – quipping: “Liz Truss’s reign as Prime Minister was shorter than a series of Love Island.”

Made in Chelsea star Georgia Toffolo simply tweeted: “My God.”

In her statement, Ms Truss said Britain had been ‘held back for too long by low economic growth’. She added she was elected by her party with a mandate to change this.

But she said: “I recognise though given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative party.”

A fresh leadership election – to decide the next Tory leader and therefore the next prime minister – will be completed within the next week.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer demanded a general election “now” so that the nation can have “a chance at a fresh start”.
