Piers Morgan, 56, shared a screenshot of the angry message to his Instagram story for all his 1.8 million followers to see. However, the twist in the tale comes in the form of an apology that the user sent some time later in the early hours of the morning.

In the message, user @musicman53 slated him for his “privilege” and criticised Piers for flaunting his “gross lifestyle”.

However, in a surprise u-turn the man later said sorry, claiming that he had been under the influence when the DM was sent.

As somewhat of a veteran of social media spats, Piers took the whole conversation in good humour and decided his followers should join in on the fun.

The broadcaster re-shared the message with his eight million Twitter followers, prompting some amusing comments from his fans.

In the message the Instagram user, who goes by Steve, wrote: “Piers please stop reminding us how privileged you are.

“You are a journalist, not a surgeon, or a military general sacrificing all for Queen and country.

“A scribbler, albeit it a very successful one.

“So stop sending IG pictures of your gross lifestyle during these difficult times for many.”

He savagely concluded: “In short… Piers stop reminding us of how small your self esteem and d*** is!”

However, the screenshot revealed that the man had sent another message at 3am.

“I was drunk… Sorry,” he confessed with a sad emoji.

In his Twitter re-post Piers captioned the image: “This just about sums up my Instagram inbox,” adding two laughing emoji faces at the end.

Over 300 people commented on the post and many of them also chose to see the funny side.

“At least he said sorry,” wrote Tanzanian musician and MP Mwana FA with a laughing emoji.

User @emzjEma thought the apology only added to the hilarity of the rant.

They said: “The fact he reflected on this when sober (after putting so much effort into it when drunk) and felt it best to message again and apologise has made this rant even funnier for me!”

Other people weren’t pleased with Piers and felt that Steve had a point.

“Drunk or not, he has a point? You don’t need to post this sort of stuff, it smacks of trying to ‘prove’ you have succeeded and are looking for people to say: ‘Wow, haven’t you done well’.

“Slightly odd behaviour,” wrote Heather Smallpack.

Richard Pryce added: “Correct or incorrect, the guy made a mistake while under the influence then apologised.

“You don’t publicly shame all the ones who don’t apologise so why did you feel the need to do it to this guy?”
