Ex Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan, 55, quit the ITV show after sparking 41,000 Ofcom complaints with his comments made about Meghan Markle. The journalist had presented the show alongside Susanna Reid for over five years.

Taking to Twitter today, he asked the Society of Editors to remove his nomination for Columnist of the Year.

He wrote in view of his 7.8 million followers: “I’ve been nominated in @EditorsUK awards as Columnist of the Year.

“Obviously, some deranged wokie is now going to make a fuss about this & demand I be cancelled from the shortlist, to make a name for themselves.

“So before they do, I am cancelling myself. Remove my nomination.”

Many of his followers flocked to his post to comment.

One user wrote: “Why are you giving into the mob? This is like a walk over… No need to do it. Fight Mr. Morgan, fight!”

Another commented: “There’s a huge difference between ‘being cancelled’ and running away when challenged, Piers. You resigned, remember.”

A third added: “Don’t remove yourself Piers… please. You have so many people supporting you, including me.

“I can only imagine how difficult things are for you right now. You may be Piers Morgan but you still must be hurting.

“I am new to Twitter, I cannot believe some of the comments I read.”

Piers quit the show amid claims he refused to apologise for his comments about the Duchess of Sussex, following her interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The father-of-four said he didn’t believe a word Meghan said as she opened up about her life in the Royal Family.

During the bombshell interview, Prince Harry’s wife claimed she felt suicidal and didn’t receive any help when asked.

She also claimed a member of the Royal Family expressed concerns about the colour of her son Archie’s skin colour.

Speaking out about his exit the following day, he told reporters: “I had a good chat with ITV and we agreed to disagree.

“I’m just going to take it easy and see how we go.

“I believe in freedom of speech, I believe in the right to be allowed to have an opinion.

“If people want to believe Meghan Markle, that’s entirely their right.”

He added: “I don’t believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth and I think the damage she’s done to the British monarchy and to the Queen at a time when Prince Philip is lying in hospital is enormous and frankly contemptible.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
