Piers Morgan isn’t too excited about Freedom Day tomorrow, branding the end of lockdown restrictions ‘disingenuous nonsense’.
The nation is counting down the hours until Monday (July 19) when the majority of lockdown measures are lifted across England. It will see nightclubs open and face masks moved to an advisable recommendation rather than law.
However, on Sunday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Chancellor Rishi Sunak were both pinged by the NHS Test and Trace app after coming into contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19.
It was initially revealed that neither would have to self isolate as they planned on taking part in a pilot scheme that would have allowed them to continue working from Downing Street.
Reacting to the original plan, Piers tweeted: ‘WHAT? So once again, one rule for the people setting the rules and another for the rest of us? This is a terrible decision.’
In a dramatic turn of events, it was then announced that Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak would indeed go into self isolation after all.
So, @RobertJenrick spends all morning tortuously defending the indefensible ‘one rule for us, one rule for everyone else’ conduct of his Prime Minister & Chancellor, only for them to wait until he comes off air before admitting it was indefensible & they’re no longer doing it.
Nothing will more perfectly illustrate the disingenuous data-ignoring nonsense of ‘Freedom Day’ tomorrow than Boris Johnson locked away at Chequers, self-isolating from the virus we’re supposed to be free from.
Hi Joe, since you ask respectfully not abusively, I’d say that I honestly don’t know but opening everything up tomorrow given the surging Delta cases & so many people still to be vaccinated, seems a huge gamble to me.
We all want freedom, but not if it leads to more lockdowns. https://t.co/5Fcy03ovN1
Piers then told his followers: ‘So, @RobertJenrick spends all morning tortuously defending the indefensible “one rule for us, one rule for everyone else” conduct of his Prime Minister & Chancellor, only for them to wait until he comes off air before admitting it was indefensible & they’re no longer doing it.

One follower asked Piers when he thinks lockdown restrictions should ease, to which the former Good Morning Britain presenter replied: ‘Hi Joe, since you ask respectfully not abusively, I’d say that I honestly don’t know but opening everything up tomorrow given the surging Delta cases & so many people still to be vaccinated, seems a huge gamble to me.
‘We all want freedom, but not if it leads to more lockdowns.’
