Piers Morgan says he wouldve slapped Alex Beresford amid row as he defends Will Smith

Piers Morgan has said that he would have slapped Alex Beresford if he hadn’t stormed off his presenting role on Good Morning Britain last year.

The former GMB host quit the programme last year after ITV bosses asked him to apologise for comments made about Meghan Markle’s Oprah interview last year.

Piers, 57, had got into an argument with weather presenter Alex Beresford, 41, on the show after Piers was called out for his criticism of Meghan Markle on the show, which led to the presenter storming off the set.

Now, Piers has opened up on how he left the set to avoid slapping his co-host, after coming to Will Smith’s defence after he slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars.

Coming to Will’s defence, Piers blasted what he called “snowflakery bulls***”, saying he probably would have “done the same”.

He tweeted: "So much snowflakey bullsh*t re Oscars smackdown. You can think Will Smith wrong to slap Chris Rock but still understand why he did it if he thought – incorrectly – Rock was deliberately mocking his wife’s alopecia in front of a gazillion people. I’d have probably done the same."

One sceptical follower shared a screen grab of the famous moment he walked off GMB and replied: "Course you would!"

Piers then quote tweeted the remark and wrote: "Ironically, I walked out to stop myself slapping him…"

However, some followers weren’t impressed, with one writing: “Not something to be proud of frankly. Free speech is cherished by Piers as long as you agree with what he is saying."

Another remarked: "Just because you can understand why he did it doesn’t make doing it right. He should have walked away. Or go back stage and talk to him."

Alex and Piers'a infamous argument started live on air when Alex called his colleague's behaviour towards Meghan "absolutely diabolical" and said that the Duchess of Sussex was "entitled to cut [Piers] off".

Since the incident at the Oscars on Sunday night, Jada Pinkett-Smith has spoken out for the first time, sharing a quote to Instagram which read: “This is a season for healing and I’m here for it.”

Prior to that, her husband Will issued an apology for now infamous slap, as he insisted: “Violence is poisonous.”

Will's apology, posted on Instagram, continued: "My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally."

He continued: "I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris. I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.

"I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.

"I am a work in progress. Sincerely, Will."
