Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle were spotted in New York City on Monday – their first public appearance since their bombshell Netflix documentary trailer dropped.
In photos obtained by Page Six, the couple were spotted stepping into a black SUV as they arrived in the Big Apple ahead of the Ripple of Hope Awards, where they are receiving the prestigious human rights award after standing up against "structural racism" in the Royal Family.
Harry, 38, was spotted wearing a white button-down shirt and black slacks, and holding a black coat. Meanwhile Meghan, 41, looked chic in all-black complete with large black sunglasses and a black handbag. Her hair was also pulled back into a low ponytail.
The Robert F Kennedy Humans Rights foundation, named after former president John F Kennedy’s younger brother, organises the annual event.
John F Kennedy's niece Kerry Kennedy, 63, hosts the gala, and has said that Harry and Meghan have been "heroic" by standing up against The Firm.
Kerry, who is a lawyer and human rights activist, told online news website El Confidencial: “They went to the oldest institution in UK history and told them what they were doing wrong, that they couldn’t have structural racism within the institution; that they could not maintain a misunderstanding about mental health.
“They knew that if they did this there would be consequences, that they would be ostracised, they would lose their family, their position within this structure, and that people would blame them for it."
She added: “They have done it anyway because they believed they couldn’t live with themselves if they didn’t question this authority. I think they have been heroic in taking this step.”
Organisers revealed that Harry and Meghan had been selected for the award because they have “demonstrated a lifelong commitment to building strong and equitable communities, advancing the global dialogue around mental health, and advocating for a better world – both on and offline.”
The Sussexes will be joined by other award recipients at the event with the likes of Volodymyr Zelensky, the Ukrainian president, set to be honoured.
This comes just a week after the trailer for the couples new Netflix docuseries was released, with the release date being Thursday, December 8.
As their followers appear to be in favour of the controversial docuseries, others have hit out at the couple and labelled it as a “destructive act of revenge”.
Royal author Richard Fitzwilliams said: “This is a full frontal, extremely destructive attack on the Royal Family – the institution as well as individual households and members of those households. This series I suspect will greatly weaken the royals in the eyes of the world, especially among young people.”
But while it appears as if the power is in Harry and Meghan’s hands, an anonymous royal source, who is a relative of King Charles III, told Good Morning Britain that Netflix is “exploiting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex”.
Noel Phillips said on the show: “We’ve been speaking to a relative of the King who has spoken anonymously to his programme who has essentially accused Netflix of exploiting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex saying that the £88 million deal they signed in telling their story, Netflix has taken it and they have glamorised it and manipulated the story.”
