Meghan Markle and Prince Harry put aside their drama with the royal family and showed up to support the Queen during her Platinum Jubilee, but apparently their reunion with the royals wasn’t exactly smooth sailing.
Royal expert and author Christopher Andersen tells Us Weekly that Meghan and Harry’s attempts to “mend fences” didn’t go well, and that palace officials “sidelined” them during official events.
“They went there hoping to mend fences and ran into a brick wall,” he told Us, noting that he was “was personally surprised” that Meghan and Harry were “excluded” from the royals’ balcony appearance during Trooping the Colour.
“I thought that there would be an opportunity for [Harry] to show up there to show the solidarity [and] the future of the monarchy,” he said. “I’m sure they expected to have a warmer welcome than what they received.”
Prince William and Kate Middleton also didn’t make it to the party Meghan and Harry threw for their daughter Lilibet’s first birthday, though a source previously said that “It was purely coincidental. Harry is coming back to visit soon and hopes to see William in person. They are trying to figure things out. Harry and Meghan had a wonderful time seeing the queen again. It was one of the biggest highlights of their year so far.”
And when it comes to the balcony, Buckingham Palace did warn everyone in advance that the moment would be for working royals only—meaning Harry and Meghan (along with Harry’s cousins Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, and his aunt Princess Anne) were unable to attend!
